AOL FAQ

  • Why do my graphics show up in MicroSoft Internet Explorer (AOL Browser) but not in Netscape Navigator?
    1. This is because AOL by default has Compressed Graphics turned on. To turn off Compressed Graphics go to http://uaolwr.simplenet.com/help/help12.htm for AOL 3.0 or http://uaolwr.simplenet.com/help/help11.htm for AOL 4.0 and follow the step by step instructions. Also, an AOL ring memeber sent in these suggestions: "I discovered the problem which was causing the blurry graphics which I had downloaded from your Webring info site. For future reference in assisting others who may encounter this problem, my system in "Preferences" was set up in AOL to "compress" downloaded images in order to speed up the process of internet exploring. However, image quality suffers dramatically. I "decompressed" my system, downloaded the graphics again, reinstalled them on the main page of my website, and now your graphics look sharp and clear to me. If others have this problem, it is also necessary to delete one's temporary internet files because these files will still be holding the former stuff that's been downloaded there. It'll take a bit longer for things to load in but the picure quality is very much improved."
  • Why does the WebRing fragment(code) appear distorted after I add it to my page using Personal Publisher?
break after each line of code. When
    1. Personal Publisher adds what is known as a line using Personal Publisher it is best to use a one line code and follow the instructions at http://uaolwr.simplenet.com/help/help07.htm
  • Why did someone tell me that a webring fragment is best in one line for AOL members?
    1. Personal Publisher adds a line break after each line of code that is entered. If you enter a 8 line code fragment it will add 8 line breaks that you don't want. To avoid this problem refer to question 2.
  • Someone said that My Place stores my graphics in .art format by default. Is this true?
    1. No! "My Place" stores your files exactly as you've made or copied them. If you copied a graphic from the web without turning compressed graphics off it will cause "My Place" to store those in .art format no matter what extension you've given them.
  • If I graphics saved in .art format how do I convert them to a usable format?
    1. It's fairly simple to do. Follow the instructions at http://uaolwr.simplenet.com/help/help01.htm to convert them to .jpg (JPEG) format which is usable by all browsers that use graphics. Remember there are Text Only browsers out there.
  • Will .bmp files work with all browsers?
    1. NO, follow the instructions at http://uaolwr.simplenet.com/help/help01.htm to convert them to .jpg (JPEG) format which is usable by all browsers that use graphics. Remember there are Text Only browsers out there.
  • Why does AOL email make it so hard to copy and paste?
    1. AOL's email is made to read email as if it was a webpage. In other words, it turns all html code into it's active appearance. Link codes become active links. Once the code is rendered like this it is nearly impossible to copy and paste. Do not use the HTML frgment in the e-mail. Go instead to the URL in the e-mail and copy and paste the HTML fragment from the web instead.
  • What is this .ART format?
    1. The .art format stands for Static Art format. This is AOL's way of making pages load faster for their members. It Compresses any graphic format to a smaller graphic file that takes less time to load, including animated graphics. You can turn this off by following the step by step instructions at http://uaolwr.simplenet.com/help/help12.htm for AOL 3.0 or http://uaolwr.simplenet.com/help/help11.htm for AOL 4.0 .
  • How do I get .GIFs and .JPGs, not .ARTs?
    1. As covered in Questions 1 and 9, you can turn off the Compressed Graphics by following the instructions at http://uaolwr.simplenet.com/help/help12.htm for AOL 3.0 or http://uaolwr.simplenet.com/help/help11.htm for AOL 4.0 .
  • Is there another way to have the ring graphics show without downloading them and adding them to my page directly?
    1. You can use the option that is available to AOL users only - you can link to the graphics on my page if you are having trouble figuring out how to upload them to your AOL page. Please e-mail me for instructions
