CAR SALES in 1998

Europe
More then 14 million cars were sold in Western Europe in 1998. Initial cautious forecasts about 3-% growth of sales have been updated monthy - upwards. Threats of world recession did not carry into effect. Confidence of buyers remained high and the sales even increased towards the end of the year thus arising the doubt as to whether Europe has to expect negative trend if not already in 1999 than in 2000 and beyond.
Manufacturers - some kept or improved their positions (Volkswagen, Renault, Mercedes, Koreans) while some deteriorated (Ford, Opel, Fiat). (by G. Boncelj)

USA
As far as sales are concerned, USA had good year, too - although not as good as Europe. 7.500.000 new trucks (+6,9 %) were sold and 8.100.000 cars (-1,6 %). Dealers overseas reported then on 15.600.000 vehicles sold (increase of 2,9 % compared to the year 1997).

Japan
Quite opposite information came from Japan, shaking in the middle of the Asian recession. In 1998 4.340.000 cars, buses and trucks were sold, which is 15 % less than in previous year. This reduction is the greatest in last 25 years, after 1974, when it was as much as 29 %.

Travel faster than light-speed?
INCREDIBLE! FANTASTIC! SCIENCE FICTION? Will new millenium bring new ways of travel? New research by theoretical physicist Chris Van Den Broeck, from Leuven, BE, indicates that travel faster than the speed of light is theoretically possible! The essence of the idea: the space contracts in front of the ship and expands behind it. If this idea proves true, HEUREKA Zweistein (new Einstein)!!
