A lot of people think the min pin is 'a smaller version of the Doberman Pinscher'. They are NOT. In fact min pins are a much older breed and are not related in any way.
Min Pins originated in Germany somewhere around 1836. They are believed to be a cross between the Dachshund and the Italian Greyhound.
They were bred to hunt vermin, such as rats, in barns. They were not very good house dogs in their earlier days.
The name Pinscher comes from the German translation 'to pinsch'. Terrier dogs, which is what min pins were considered in their earlier days, would kill its prey by pinching the spinal cord at the back of the neck.
If you have ever seen a min pin walk, you may have noticed that they have a very proud walk. This walk is referred to as a 'hackney-like gait'. It is similar to that of a hackney pony.
Min pins are very proud and alert dogs. They strive for attention and will make sure they get it. They are also escape artists, they can get out of almost any outdoor enclosure. And they LOVE to explore. They will find things in your house that you lost years ago.
Min Pins love to snuggle. They like to curl up under a nice warm blanket with you. That's where both of mine sleep, right next to me under the cover.
Min Pins hate to be alone. If their owner is away a lot, they need a friend. Such as another dog, or even a cat.
Many people say min pins are 'toddlers who never grow up'. I have to say that I agree.
Min Pins are known as the 'Reigning King of Toys'. I suppose this is because in their point of veiw, everything in the house belongs to them, no exceptions. Mine take turns eating. My female eats first and will NOT let anyone else share with her. When she's done my male eats. And then, finally, my chihuahua gets her share.
