Congratulations to Massachusetts, They have implemented NEW math standards as of November 2000. These are standards any state would be proud of.

California has embarked on extensive statewide math testing. The STAR testing includes Stanford-9 supplemented with questions covering California standards. STAR 2000 results breaks out Integrated HS math programs and Traditional. Taking an arbitrary grade of 30 out of 65 correct on average per county at the 10th grade level you see 70% of the traditional counties exceeded 30 out of 65, while only 26% of Integrated Math exceeded 30 out of 65.
It is un-nerving to know that the Federal government is usurping local control of education by giving states large sums of money to implement changes like "New-New Math".  The OERI is the US DOE "scientific research" branch of the USDOE.  Rhode Island was given over $600,000 dollars to write what has been called the worst Math Standards in the country.  Over 8 million was given to the state by the NSF to implement state-wide change in Math.
One of the NSF high school level math programs is Math Connections.  This program is now showing up in RI.
