The Acrylics Page

My experiments in color and contrast

These are some of my acrylic paintings. I must preface this display by stating this is by no means my best work. The good paintings sell quickly. The scans as well are inferior but it should give you an idea of my talent and technique.

This first piece is
"Strolling"
It is a study in blues with bright reddish oranges and pinks to lighten the larger masses on the right(the buildings and road). I am fond of this piece because of the balance between right and left is done with color rather than the size of the individual objects. Also note how bright the road in the foreground is. This was to immeadiatly draw the eye to this point. The eye then travels up to couple before revealing the setting and circumstances surrounding them. Note: The couple are my mother and late father. The train engineer is my brother.

This is one of my latest acrylics. I hadn't done a thing in this medium in over two years. It is titled

"Lakeside"

This next one is a piece I did for my wife. She loves winter.
It is simply titled,

"Snow"

This is a original composition, floral I did for my brother's family... Notice the hummingbird outside the window. I never had a feel for florals but I am pleased with this one.
Titled,

"Tea Time".

This one is one of my passions, still life.
title,

"Cornucopia"

The rest of my online work are fantasy pieces. These I things I do to tickle my imagination, and to take a break from more serious paintings.

This one is "Couples"
Note the daring use of darks in the foreground to "trap" the images I want you to see first and to frame the image. A good painting should unfold like well told tale. Revealing itself in well metered incriments. Notice the couple on the bridge. They are not immediatly apparent. This helps to convey my message that couples in love are in worlds far removed from others. Involved only with each other, neither couple is aware that the other even exist. Another amusing note is the fact that the male fairy is a self portrait, the female my foster sister, and the couple in the background are my parents.

This second piece is "Challenge"
An admittedly trite piece, expounding the metaphore that everyone has their dragons to slay. Just like "strolling" this piece is decidedly heavy and busy on the right side but is balanced by the brightness and simplicity of the left side, which suprisingly commands more attention. Although far from my favorite piece. I like the way the castle in background came out.

This next piece is "Morning Shower".
It is a potentially risque piece. I masked the "naughty parts" with the cascading water. Again this piece is heavy on the right. This time rather than lightening the right, I made the wings bright and dominant. The curve of the flower stem and the darks in the far right and bottom keep the eye "trapped" in the center of the page. This scan is exceptionally bad because I did it directly on the scanner in 4 sections.

This is the last in my fantasy series, appropriatly named "Over the Edge"
It is a self portrait as well. Admittedly I was mildly depressed over an impending divorce at the time this was painted... but the one with the beak is NOT my wife.

This is one I did for my daughter. A Christmas piece based on a Disney artist's idea.
Title, "Santa Bug"
