Theodore is the English form of a Greek name, Theodoros. Originally it meant “Gift of God” from “theos” (god) and “doron” (gift).

Theodore has always been a very common name among members of the Eastern Orthodox Church. Though a great favorite in Russia, Theodore was rare in England before the 17th century. It became more common in the 19th century.
