AMERICAN WIREHAIR
La-Perm
 |
A pair of farm cats living on a farm in Vernon-State of New York
USA in 1966,produced a Red/White male kitten with a dense harsh
coat which was springy. He was purchased along with his straight
coated sister by a Rex breeder. Adams wirehaired gene proved
to be dominant,so no outcrosses were undertaken. The hair of
these cats is different in that they are hooked or bent.
CALIFORNIA REX
In 1959 Mrs Blancherie, found two wavy haired cats in a rescue
centre in San Bernadino,a female odd-eyed Tortie and her
Red Tabby son. They were aquired bythe Smiths who when
mated Mum back to son found she produced kittens with long
silky coats. They were found to be genetically compatible
to the Cornish Rex,but due to lack of interest this breed
faded away. Also known as the Marcel cat.
CORNISH REX
IN 1950 a tortie
farm cat gave birth to 5 kittens, one of which was curly coated.Mrs
E nnismore
called this Red/White male Kallibunker.
Advised by her vet
she mated him back to his
mother.Geneticist Mr Jude was contacted who confirmed
the repeat matings of Kallibunker to his mother. One of the
kittens
was given to the vet and kept entire, which was fortunate
as due to increasing kittens,Mrs Ennismore had Kallibunker
put to sleep. All the inbreeding had led to reduced
vigor and kittens were dying a few days after birth. One kitten
a rare fertile blue-cream male named Poldhu sired healthy
kittens and was purchased by Brian Stirling-Webb,who
had gathered togrther a band of breeders to establish the
Cornish
Rex as a breed.
Mr Jude advised
that Poldu have an op to establish his chromosone count
but this rendered him sterile. To compensate the vet gave Mr
Stirling-Webb his male Sham Pain Chas-who carried forward the
Cornish lines. Before he was steralised Pohdu sired a female
who was mated back to him and exported to the States. As back
then Cornish breeders are still outcrossing to maintain vigour
due to the still small gene pool available.

DUTCH REX
Reported in Holland in 1985 but not developed!.Had a coarser
wavy coat with a brittle texture.
GERMAN REX
In 1946 a rexed black feral cat was rescued from the grounds
of a hospital in East Berlin and named Lammchen. The breed
was seriously taken up in 1951 by German breeders following
the Cornish discovery. Lammchen had many litters and when
10 years old was mated by one of her sons and produced a
litter of rexed kittens. In 1960 two of Lammchens daughters
were exported to the USA. From hair samples geneticist proved
the German Rex was compatable to the Cornish. In Europe the
German Rex is regarded as a separate breed due to the body
confirmation being more like a European shorthair. The German
Rex is more popular in Germany and the surrounding
Eastern countries. In the USA th breed has been breed into
the Cornish Rex.

ITALIAN REX
Found in 1950,a wavy coated cat clearly showed a Rex mutation, but
not used in any serious breeding programme and eventually
vanished.
LA PERM
On a farm in the Dalles, Oregon in 1982 a farm cat produced a
litter of kittens, one female was bald,at 8 weeks she grew
a soft curly coat. Linda Koehl had many similar kittens born
over the next few years and decided to establish a breeding
program. The kittens are now born with a straight coat, curling
at 6 weeks. The La Perm has a soft tight curly coat either
short or long coated the shorthair has an afro look while
the longhair has very tight ringlets. The body is slightly
foreign, with a long face and tall ears,it is affectionate
and easy going.
MAINE WAVES
In 1988 Di Everett an English Mainecoon breeder, reported that
she had a rex coated Mainecoon in her litter, further matings
to her stud to different Queens produced 3 more rex coated
kittens. The recessive gene has proved not related to the
Devon/American Wirehair and probably neither the Cornish
genes. It occurs in every 200 Mainecoons born. There is some
interest as to a new breed, but Mainecoon breeders see the
rex gene as a problem to be eliminated.
MISSOURI REX
IN 1990 a rex mutation in Missouri,USA occurred,to date
no more information has been heard about this rex.
OHIO REX
This breed was discovered in 1944,but due to WW2 was ignored.
In 1953 a curly coated male kitten was born to a domestic
cat owned by Mary Medderman from Plainsville Ohio.Toni died
young from an infection but 3 more curly coated kittens were
born to the same parents. As no long term breeding programme
was established this breed died out.

OREGON REX
Another rex discovered in 1944 and ignored due to the war.
Mrs Stringham of Werrenton Oregon in 1959 found a wavy coated
B/W female kitten in a litter from her Tortie Queen. She called
her Kinky Marcel and was the founder of the Oregon rex breed.
Crosses to both Cornish and Devons produced only straight coated
kittens showing the Oregon Rex to have its own gene.
PRUSSIAN CAT
A curly coated cat reputed to be from a Russian Blue and Angora
cross.Called Kater Munk he was found in Konnigsberg in
Germany in the early 1930s but does not appear to have been
bred.
POODLE CAT
Dr Rosumarie Wolf,a German Scottish Fold breeder experimented
to produce a new rex cat in 1994. She crossed a Devon Rex
with her Scottish Folds. This produced a rexed cat with folded
ears, she called this man made breed a poodle cat.
SELKIRK REX
A female calico kitten born amoung a litter of 7,was born
at an animal shelter in Montana USA. She was adopted by a Persian
breeder and was bred,3 of her 6 kittens produced were curly coated, indicating
the gene was dominant, further matings produced both longhairs
and shorthairs,so Jeri mated her to his Champion Persian. As the
gene was dominant the breed was easily established and he named
the breed after the nearby mountains. The breed is accepted in
the US as both long and short haired. The head is wide and rounded
with a short muzzle, ears are smaller than a Cornish or Devon, coarse
guard hairs are present in a thick plush coat.
SI-REX
In the UK a description used to describe the Himalayan coat pattern
of both Cornish and Devon Rexes. In the USA it is a
Cornish rex with a Himalayan coat pattern recognised by the
CFA as a distinct breed.
VICTORIA CAT
In 1972 a kitten carrying the wavy rex gene was born to a feral
cat in the Victoria district of London. The hair samle taken
was proved to be incompatible with the Devon gene, but
no further information is known.
URALS REX
A wavy haired rex gene was discovered in 1991 in the Urals in
Russia, but little more information has been given. |
