We live in the old town of Hastings,which is 3 streets –The Bourne (where the old river flowed, now the old road to London,The High Street and our street-All saints, (Tackleway is a road almost on the East hill). We are at the bottom of two hills-The East hill and the West hill of which Hastings Castle built by William the Conquerer stands. The Old Town is very much a Fishing industry but has become a very popular tourist attraction, with our long History and of course the Battle of Hastings. Our attractions include:-The Smugglers Caves,Hastings castle, The Sealife Centre,Victorian East and West hill cliff Railways,The unique Beach launched Fishing Fleet, Cliffs, Mueseams, Lifeboats, Carnival and Old town week-2nd week Aug,Mayday, 1066 Bonfire celebrations, to name just a few. The East Sussex Cat Club(to which I am a founder member)also holds its Championship show here 2nd Sat in July. Local famous people include-John Logie Baird (First TV transmissions from Hastings), Robert Tressel (Author), Elizebeth Blackwell (first Female Doctor), Catherine Cookson (Author) Grey Owl (Archie Belaney-conservationist), Harry H Corbet (actor) and Titus Oats to name just a few. |
