HEAVENLEIGH HARES
By Jayne and Michaela wood est:1975
The Belgian hare is one of the oldest fancy breeds, having been imported from Belgian in 1874. The breed was exported from both Belgian and England to America at the end of the 19th century and produced the Belgian Hare boom, one of the most astonishing phenomenons of the rabbit world, with some fetching as much as $1000. Genetically it is of the wild Agouti colour, much modified by additional genes to give it a rich deep red tan or chestnut shade.

The breed has always been selected for extreme length, fineness and gracefulness, known sometimes as the poor mans racehorse. It compares very well with a wild hare rather than a rabbit,a fact which has led many to belive it is a hare, which it is not.
Its origins are obsure, although there is eviedence to show it was selected from an old breed known as the Patagonian which was also the progenitor of the Flemish Giant.

The Belgian Hare is what a Siamese is in the cat world one smart rabbit.
