"Dead" Suspect Resurrects Panafrican News Agency September 6, 2000 Posted to the web September 6, 2000 Nairobi, Kenya Confusion, shock and panic gripped mortuary attendants and police officers in one of Kenya's agricultural towns Wednesday when a suspected gangster who had been presumed dead and taken to the morgue suddenly sprang to life, kicking off the bed covers with a violent jerk. The suspect, taken for dead, after being lynched by angry residents who suspected him of being a gang member in Nyeri, some 113 miles north of Nairobi, had been taken to the town's mortuary in a police van. But immediately he was thrown onto the mortuary bed, and perhaps sensing that the morgue's door was about to be shut, the middle-aged man sprang back to life, sending morgue attendants, and two police escorts scampering. On recovering from the shock, the policemen arrested the suspect, who was not identified and took him to the hospital's casualty department in handcuffs. The incident has left the residents dumb-founded and wondering whether the man had truly resurrected or had invented the drama to escape further lynching. An internal review was carried out by the Mersey Care NHS Trust and chief executive Alan Yates said staff acted with total professionalism. Standard The report conceded there had been "procedural problems" with the care of Mr Kernan but claimed none of these contributed to the shooting. It stated: 'The standard of crisis intervention support offered to Andrew prior to July 12, 2001 and on July 12, 2001 was the standard that would have been expected of Mersey Care NHS Trust. 'The administration of the community care programme approach documentation did not fully meet the standard that would have been expected of Mersey Care NHS Trust. "However, the review team do not believe that this contributed to Andrew's death." Wielding The victim's mother immediately labelled the internal investigation a "white wash". Mr Kernan, who had been under the care of local health officials for 16 years, became agitated at the flat he shared with his mother on the night of the shooting last year. The report revealed that two psychiatric nurses were sent to try to calm him down but left after he threatened to chop their heads off. Officers from Merseyside Police were called to the scene and Mr Kernan was at one point able to leave his bedroom and emerged on to the street wielding a samurai sword. Tragedy Mr Kernan, described in the report as "popular and gentle", was shot in the chest after ignoring requests to drop the weapon. Mr Yates today said his staff acted with total professionalism but pledged to work more closely with police to reduce the risk of a repeat tragedy. But Mrs Kernan today described the report as 'a total whitewash', claiming the psychiatric nurses were never threatened by Andrew and failed to look after him properly. She said: 'The care Andrew received up until the night he died was excellent. I've no complaints with that. Police inquiry "But on July 12 last year the NHS failed to safeguard Andrew's medical interests which resulted in my son's death." A separate inquiry into the actions of Merseyside Police is nearing completion. Josephine Mose, a sister of the "resurrected" woman, Margaret, said her sister who had been sick for over a year, died around 0700 on Tuesday in Mulanje, some 68 km from the commercial capital, Blantyre. "We prepared the body for burial and all was set for funeral service when we noticed her shaking," she said. Josephine said everybody in the funeral house was singing funeral hymns and praying for the dead woman's safe transition to the hereafter when Margaret sat up. The mourners jumped up very frightened. For a few minutes she looked surprised, and then she started talking. Visions Margaret later told the state-run Malawi News Agency (Mana) that she did not know what was happening during the 16 hours she had been "dead". She, however, said that during her unconsciousness she saw visions of her parent who are long dead. People in the district, which is renowned countrywide for its potent magic, believe Margaret was bewitched by some people who confused certain magic instructions leading to her resurrection. But Amon Nkhata, a clinical officer at Mulanje District Hospital, said Margaret may have just become unconscious. "There are cases when a person becomes unconscious for over 20 hours and later regains consciousness," he said. Because of the sensitive nature of this story, it was reprinted in its entirety from the broadcast news script. A Milwaukee man sits in jail, accused of stealing a dead man's identity, but he's also the prime suspect in the man's murder. WISN 12 News reporter Colleen Henry followed a trail of deception from Wisconsin to North Dakota to Canada and uncovered an elaborate scheme in this 12 News investigation. Through hell and high water, Tim Wicks' life ended with a bullet to the head. His severed torso was dumped in a northern Michigan river, his head 35 miles upstream in Wisconsin. It took Wicks' murder to get Dennis Gaede (pictured left) on the front page. Because the man police say assumed Wicks' identity was also the last to see him alive. It was music that brought Wicks and Gaede together. "Tim was a great guy. He was a good jazz drummer. He could do the Fleetwood Mac the best. And I will always remember him for that," Wicks' friend Susanne Stevens said. Susanne Stevens and Wicks played in bands together for nearly 30 years. At Christmas, Wicks announced a buddy had lined them up a great gig in Winnipeg. "He stopped here the night before at our open jam to say goodbye and said he'll be back in two weeks, and he was really happy," Stevens said. "He told us he was going to Canada to play for two weeks for $800 a week." It was big money to a guy who dreamed of being a professional musician. Both Wicks and Gaede were drummers who worked day jobs to pay the bills. Wicks had a painting business, Gaede prepared taxes at an office on Burnham Street. Police say Gaede did Wicks' (pictured right) taxes last summer, giving him access to all Wicks' identifying information. By September, Gaede had moved to North Dakota and started his transformation from Dennis Gaede to Tim Wicks. WISN 12 News followed Gaede's tracks to Fargo. "He played drums. He wasn't as good as he thought he was but ... " imposter Wicks' boss, Jeff Paridon, said. Paridon played in a band too. So when the imposter Tim Wicks showed up in Fargo last September to apply for the company's accountant opening, they hit it off. "He talked a good line. I even made the point, I said, 'Are you as good as you say you are or is this a line of?" He says 'No, I'm as good as I say I am.'" Paridon said. Paridon says things went well for a couple months, but around Christmas, he noticed money missing -- $15,000 in checks paid to Tim Wicks or his wife. At that point, Gaede stopped showing up for work. Police believe that's when Gaede headed back to Milwaukee to take care of the real Wicks. On Dec. 26, Wicks' neighbors saw Wicks and Gaede loading drums into Wicks' car outside his Hales Corners, Wis., apartment. On Jan. 2, Michigan police discovered a torso. On Jan. 16, Wisconsin police discovered a head. On Jan. 23, Paridon got a phone call from the imposter Wicks in Fargo. "He had actually contacted me and told me that if there was anything that I could get out of the house up there that would make up for what he'd taken, to go up and take a look. Well, I was going up there and I just didn't feel right about it, so I called the Fargo detectives. They said, 'Don't go near there." They said, 'Let me tell you something, the real Tim Wicks is dead,'" Paridon said. Fargo detectives told Paridon that a Wisconsin medical examiner had identified the torso and head as Wicks and Wisconsin police identified Gaede as a Wicks' imposter, and the last man to see the real Wicks alive. Paridon believes if he hadn't called police, he might have been next. "I said 'Oh boy, I pulled over to the side of the road and caught my breath for about 10 minutes, cause I don't know if the idiot was up there waiting on me or what it was," Paridon said. Investigators converged on the two-block town outside Fargo where Gaede bought a home using Wicks' name and set up housekeeping with his wife, Diana, and her 3-year-old son Joshua. As detectives seized evidence and blood samples from the house, residents of the farm community recounted how the family did little to warm up to neighbors there. At the Happy Hour tap, the owner says Diana Gaede referred to the town as Petticoat Junction and complained she couldn't get a pizza delivered, or a decent drink. "First thing she ordered is a martini and I said, 'Couldn't do it.' So then she had a mixed drink and then she had a beer. She sat here for maybe 45 minutes," bartender Elaine Mahowald. The house sits sealed and empty as forensics experts try to match Wicks' blood to spatters on the walls here and a pair of women's shoes to a print found next to Wicks' torso. Dennis Gaede sits in a Fargo jail. He declined an interview request. From the Milwaukee County jail, his wife Diana told 12 News, "Nothing we did was intentional." Diana Gaede says she's weighing what to tell police, saying "I can't say I don't know what you're talking about, no one would buy that now." Wicks' friends probably wouldn't believe it either -- they can't believe it's been four months and his murderer remains uncharged. "That was his life. He lived to play, and Dennis Gaede took that away from him and so did his wife," Stevens said. "Dennis Gaede lured him in like he was the serpent. That's how I feel about Dennis Gaede and Tim was naive, but (had) a warm heart and he had a good one and he would do anything for anybody, and I think Mr. Gaede took advantage of it," Stevens said. While Dennis Gaede is charged with stealing Wicks' name, there are no murder charges. Police told 12 News no charges have been filed because there are so many agencies involved, and they're waiting for DNA evidence. WISN 12 News tracked Dennis Gaede all the way to Canada, where Henry discovered he once lived under a stolen name. In fact, he even admitted it. (Reuters) - A California judge ruled on Monday that a motel handyman's alleged confession to three brutal killings around Yosemite National Park will be admitted to his multiple murder trial later this year. Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Thomas Hastings overruled defense objections to admit the confessions, which Cary Stayner made to FBI (news - web sites) officials and a local television news reporter after his arrest in July 1999. Stayner, 40, faces trial for the February 1999 murders of Carole Sund, 42, her daughter Juli, 15, and family friend Silvina Pelosso, 16, who were killed while on a tourist trip to the scenic valley 140 miles east of San Francisco. The 40-year-old former motel handyman is already serving a life term in federal prison for murder of Yosemite naturalist Joie Armstrong, who was attacked and decapitated near her residence in the park on July 21, 1999. Prosecutors have said they will seek the death sentence for the Sund-Pelosso murders. Stayner's attorney Marcia Morrissey had sought to suppress his alleged confession, saying the FBI used deception and sympathy tactics to coax him into making the statements after he had expressed a desire to remain silent. Morrissey said on Monday she was not surprised by Hastings' decision to admit the confession, saying that without it the prosecution's case would collapse. "You generally find that when you have that kind of situation it gets less and less likely that a statement would get suppressed when the effect of it would be to gut a prosecution's case," Morrissey told reporters after the ruling. Stayner's trial was moved to San Jose because of extensive pre-trial media coverage in the Yosemite area, which was hit by tourist fears following the 1999 murders. Jury selection is scheduled to begin June 10. Reuters | ABCNEWS.com Monday November 12 8:13 AM ET Grave-Digger Held for Skull-Sale Sideline LAGOS (Reuters) - A Nigerian grave digger with a sideline in the sale of human skulls has been arrested while trying to deliver two fresh specimens to a customer, police said on Saturday. ``We arrested a man yesterday in the Ikeja area of Lagos with two fresh human heads,'' Mike Okiro, Lagos state commissioner of police, told Reuters. In Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation with more than 110 million people, many believe witchcraft involving the use of human genitals, eyes, tongues and skulls can make them instant millionaires. ``The man said he has been in the business of supplying human heads to people for some time now. He was taking the two fresh heads to a new customer when our men arrested him,'' Okiro said. ``The man said each head fetches him about 15,000 Nigerian naira ($131). We are investigating the case to establish how he came about the heads and who his customers are.'' Police were also on the trail of another man who allegedly chopped off the heads of three people he had kidnapped. ``We have recovered the three headless bodies and are still looking for the man believed to have cut off their heads,'' Okiro said. Ritual killing to provide body parts for witchcraft is common in some parts of Nigeria. In August, three men hoping to be millionaires were arrested in the southwest for possessing a fresh human skull, which they said they bought for 500 naira and planned to use in money-making rituals. A 13-year-old girl confessed in July to taking part in the ritual killing of 48 people in the last seven years after being initiated into a secret cult. The girl told police in the northeastern city of Maiduguri that the body parts of victims, among them a two-year-old boy, were usually removed and sent to the cult headquarters in Nigeria's commercial capital of Lagos.
