SDC Basic Bulldozer v1.0 (GURPS Traveller TL6)

Copyright © 2000 by Onno Meyer

SpinDevCorp is involved in construction projects on many underdeveloped planets. SDC engineers came up with a simple bulldozer that can be operated and maintained under primitive conditions by untrained staff. A conversion kit for alcohol fuel is available for Cr112. After some months of hard use, the Basic Bulldozer is usually junk, but then it gets cannibalized to keep the replacement vehicle running.

The vehicle uses GURPS Vehicles TL 6 [second edition, first printing, June 99 errata]. GURPS Traveller doesn't change the available technology, but it influences design decisions. GURPS Traveller TL 6 would be TL 5-6 under the old Traveller TL system (in this case TL 5).

Quadripedomobile v1.0 (TL7/8)

Copyright © 2000 by Onno Meyer
This vehicle went to GURPSnet on April 1st, 2000. Take it as seriously as you like ...

The Quadripedomobile combines the comfort and speed of a bicycle with the cross-terrain performance of a hiker. A system of pulleys, levers and gears transforms the pedalling motion of the rider into forward motion of four legs. TUN Rigid Raider v1.0 (TL9)

Copyright © 2000 by Gareth Owen (glo@io.com)

The Rigid Raider is a small, stealthy and very fast boat used by the TU Navy to transport a single squad. Amphibious forces use them to stealthily deliver small assault or recon teams, Special Forces use them for infiltration and raiding and they are also used in riverine warfare as patrol boats or transports.

The Raider has a central 'spine' containing the engines, powercells and other equipment. The coxswain and gunner sit astride this spine, motorcycle fashion, while the weapons turret is forward of the gunner. On either side of the 'spine' and in front of it is the area occupied by passengers and cargo, a normal load would be up to twelve soldiers with packs, but a pure cargo load would also be possible. A small cargo compartment at the front of the spine contains twenty lifevests.

The Raider has two very powerful pumpjet propulsors, with enough power for six hours operation, or twelve hours if only one pumpjet is used. Armour is BPC for maximum protection and the boat has a full suite of stealth and sound reduction systems.

Two weapons fits are common, either a pair of SG-2 23mm HMGs or a pair of SG-1 3.2mm miniguns. If the HMGs are fitted, each gun has two 270 round ammo feeds, normally both guns have one feed for APFSDSDU ammo, while one gun has a defensive suppression ammo feed and the other has a mixed HE/HEAT feed for their alternative feeds.

[The Rigid Raider is a TL 9 vehicle [Vehicles second edition, second printing], using MA Lloyd's rules for surface area and MA Lloyd's stats for bilge pumps.]

TUAF SG-1 3.2mm Minigun v1.1 (TL9)

Copyright © 7/00 by G.Owen

A nine barreled 3.2mm gauss gatling. This weapon fires the same rounds as the M1 gauss rifle, although it has a longer range, higher rate of fire and significantly more terminal effect. It can lay down a withering barrage of fire, and is intended for area suppressing fire and point target "degradation". It can wear down ablative armour at frightening rates. The TUASF usually use it as a "doorgun" or in certain weapon pods, while the TUN call it the SG-1 and use it on some small craft, mostly in riverine and littoral operations. The most notable of these is the rigid raider.

The ammunition feed and power supply are on top of the weapon, in front of a prominent mechanical safety switch. A ventral dataport is used to control the weapon.

It is fully interchangeable with the SG-2 23mm heavy machine gun, and mountings of the two weapons can quickly be cross converted. A tripod mount version exists, with the M86 Gauss Minigun designation. The saddlemags it uses that contain 2,100 rounds and four "C" cells can be used with the SG-2, however.

Game mechanics: 3.2mm, electromag, very-long-barreled, 9-barrel electric gatling. The violation of the barrel number limit is a house rule.

TUAF SG-2 23mm Gauss HMG v1.0 (TL9)

Copyright © 7/00 by G.Owen

A single barreled 23mm gauss weapon. It is classed as a heavy machine gun due to its short barrel, although it fires cannon caliber rounds.

A hard hitting weapon, it is designed to be interchangeable with the 3.2mm SG-1 gatling, both weapons being the same weight. The weapon never found favour as a ground support weapon, but the TUASF use it as a "doorgun" in some helicopters, while the TUN call it the SG-2 and use it on certain small craft, most notably the rigid raider.

Ammunition comes in APFSDSDU, HE, HEAT, chaff, blackout gas and napalm varieties. APFSDSDU is the usual combat round, with 1:1 HE and HEAT being used for ground attack and 1:4 chaff and blackout gas for defence suppression. The napalm round is only supplied for ground applications, but might be used by special forces helicopters.

The weapon has a ventral dataport for control, a ventral power port just ahead of the dataport and two ammunition supplies, one on either side. A mechanical safety switch is also present on top of the weapon.

A tripod mount version exists, the M87 Gauss HMG, but it is not widely employed by any service. It uses 90 round ammunition belts and "E" cells.

Game mechanics: 23mm, electromag, extremely-short-barreled, heavy automatic.

TUAF S3 projector (51mm) v1.0 (TL9)

Copyright © 4/97 by G. Owen

A three barrel launcher designed to be bolted onto AFVs. The standard projectile is a blackout gas missile, with a maximum range of 210 yards. It is normally calibrated to fire out to 30 or 40 yards on the command of the driver or some other operator. It is a three barreled device, firing straight ahead and to the right and left. The centre barrel fires directly ahead, while the right and left barrels fire to either side, at an angle of 26 degrees, so that for every 10 yards forward they place their rounds five yards to the side. It is designed to nest together, so that a row of any number of launchers can be mounted in line astern.

Game mechanics: 51mm, 1.5lb launcher, 3 barrel muzzle loader - firing 51mm, normal blackout gas missiles, 0.4lb motor.

Antares-Class Far Trader v1.0 (GURPS Traveller TL9)

Copyright © 2000 by Onno Meyer

The Antares-class Far Trader is a 200 displacement ton, jump-2 ship. It has a higher cargo capacity than the common Empress Marava-class Far Trader and fewer low berths. It uses simpler technology that can be maintained and built on backwater worlds.

The Antares-class has two decks in a streamlined airframe. On the lower deck are the main cargo hold, the airlocks, the air/raft hangar and part of the tank and engines. On the upper deck are the remainder of the tank and engines, the living areas and the bridge. It usually operates with eight to ten crew, which leaves staterooms for ten to twelve passengers (with double occupancy). The Far Trader has two turrets which can take standard missile racks and sandcasters - the fusion reactor can't cope with the upgrades for energy weapons. The Antares-class is cheaper than the Empress Marava-class, but that is balanced by a higher maintenance requirement and a much lower acceleration.

The vehicle uses GURPS Vehicles TL 9 [second edition, first printing, June 99 errata] as modified by GURPS Traveller. GURPS Traveller TL 9 would be TL 9 to 11 under the old Traveller TL system (in this case TL 11).

Subassemblies and Body Features:

Countermissile Mk.IV v3.0 (TL11)

Copyright © 2000 by Onno Meyer

The Countermissile is a small space combat weapon with a nuclear-pumped x-ray laser warhead. Usually the engine is used to reach a safe detonation distance from the launching vehicle and the lasing rods are aimed by remote control at incoming missiles, but the missile has a basic guidance unit for fire-and-forget homing attacks as well. The Countermissile is too small and myopic to harm real warships, but it could kill merchants or small craft.

The vehicle uses GURPS Vehicles TL 11 [second edition, first printing, June 1999 errata] and some house rules. The warhead uses the rule proposed by MA Lloyd, cost and size of a nuclear self-destruct were not reduced and the delta-V calculation comes from real-world physics.

Modular Space Combat Mine Mk.IV v1.0 (TL11)

Copyright © 2000 by Onno Meyer

The Modular Space Combat Mine is a comparatively lightweight frame for the standardized warhead socket. A typical use are minefields with a mix of Nuclear-Pumped X-Ray Laser Modules as weapon systems and Sensor Modules for better command and control. Additionally, the Mine can be used as a kind of 'deep space bomb' that is dropped by warships on their flightpath to coast to the target. For each Modular Space Combat Drone, a ship can carry five Modular Space Combat Mines.

Space Corvette Mk.IV v1.0 (TL11)

Copyright © 2000 by Onno Meyer

The Corvette is one of the smallest effective ships of an interstellar navy. It is intended for for convoy escort and patrol duty. No beam weapon with a sufficient range and punch would fit into the Corvette, which makes it by necessity a missile-heavy design. The Space Corvette could carry two Modular Space Combat Drones on external mounts and four Drones in internal bays, but usually it carries a balanced load of eight Modular Space Combat Missiles and 40 Countermissiles in the bays. Three lasers are used for point defense. The sublight engines of the Corvette are strong enough to injure unprotected crewmembers - even the stewards have padded seats!

The vehicle uses GURPS Vehicles TL 11 [second edition, first printing, June 99 errata]. A hyperdrive according to VE39/S89, the FTL communicator according to VE48 (but no FTL radar) and the nuclear-pumped x-ray laser proposed by MA Lloyd are available, which affects even those craft that don't mount them.

Space Cruiser Mk.IV v1.0 (TL11)

Copyright © 2000 by Onno Meyer

The Space Cruiser is a flexible warship for an interstellar navy. It is intended to form the core of small squadrons or to support battleships. For long-range punch, the design is missile-heavy - six offensive launchers can fire 75 Modular Space Combat Drones or 150 Modular Space Combat Missiles, twelve defensive launchers hold a total of 750 Countermissiles. The 54 GJ spinal laser has an effective range over a lightsecond, but it can't damage battleships. Point defense is provided by six 1.44 GJ lasers. The Cruiser carries two platoons of Marines as boarding and security force. They can be deployed by the ten Space Force Pinnaces in the boat bays, but they don't really have the equipment and numbers for an opposed landing. The thrusters are strong enough to injure unprotected crew, and even the Marines have padded seats.

Space Destroyer Mk.IV v1.0 (TL11)

Copyright © 2000 by Onno Meyer

The Space Destroyer is a very fast ship for an interstellar navy. It is intended to scout and screen for task forces or to escort high-value units. To complement the strong thrusters, the Destroyer is a beam-heavy ship with a spinal 43.2 GJ laser. Secondary weapons are two 1.44 GJ lasers and a mix of missiles. The Destroyer could carry eight Modular Space Combat Drones in the internal bays and four more on hardpoints, but a balanced loadout of 16 Modular Space Combat Missiles and 80 Countermissiles is more likely. The boat bay usually holds three Space Force Pinnaces and a few probes or sats. One notable feature are the gel baths that protect work stations for every crewmember, even the stewards. Full thrust could kill unprepared spacers.

Space Force Pinnace Mk.IV v1.0 (TL11)

Copyright © 2000 by Onno Meyer

The Pinnace is a small craft for the ships of an interstellar navy. It is used as a light utility shuttle, a marine landing craft and a lifeboat. The Pinnace has seats and bunks for two crew, seats for eight passengers (plus one casualty on a stretcher) and a cargo hold for some four tons of payload. It has basic EW gear and two CIWS weapons - not enough against an advanced aerospace defense, but probably good enough against handheld SAMs. The life support is rated for 30 persons, but that would leave no safety margin at all.

Deneb-Class Far Trader v1.0 (GURPS Traveller TL12)

Copyright © 2000 by Onno Meyer

The Deneb-class Far Trader is a 200 displacement ton, jump-2 ship. It has a higher cargo capacity than the common Empress Marava-class Far Trader and fewer low berths. It uses much more advanced technology, which makes it an uncommon sight in the Marches except for areas around worlds like Mora or Glisten.

The Deneb-class has two decks in a streamlined airframe. On the lower deck are the main cargo hold, the airlocks, the air/raft hangar and part of the tanks and engines. On the upper deck are the remainder of the tanks and engines, the living areas and the bridge. It usually operates with seven to nine crew, which leaves staterooms for eleven to thirteen passengers (with double occupancy). The Far Trader has two turrets which can take standard weapon modules - 405 MJ lasers, missiles or sandcasters.

The vehicle uses GURPS Vehicles TL 12 [second edition, first printing, June 99 errata] as modified by GURPS Traveller. GURPS Traveller TL 12 would be TL 15 under the old Traveller TL system.

Garal N.Th. Harvester v1.0 (GURPS Traveller TL8-12)

Copyright © 2000 by Onno Meyer

The "Harvester" is a mobile slaughterhouse complex operating on Dinomn (Lanth/Spinward Marches). Dinomn is a sparsely settled agricultural world, and with contragrav technology it makes sense to bring the slaughterhouse to the herds. Since Dinomn had no local aircraft industry, the "Harvester" was built by a Vargr cooperative, the Garal Ngekvol Thaeghz - their design was almost 70 percent cheaper than the competing offer from LSP.

Most of the flattened ovoid airframe is taken by the slaughterhouse. A bulge under the nose contains the bridge, the crew quarters and a shooting platform for half a dozen hunters. Four extending arms are used to collect the animals and to lift them through hatches into the main hull. A landing pad on top is used by container carriers that collect the frozen meat and bring it to the starport.

The vehicle uses GURPS Vehicles [second edition, first printing, June 99 errata] as modified by GURPS Traveller. The tech level of the airframe is 10, individual components range from TL 8 to TL 12. The factory module from Pyramid 23 was used to represent the food processing plant.

Subassemblies:
