Famous Haunted Places

SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA: 525 South Winchester Blvd., the Winchester Mystery House, was owned by Sarah Pardee Winchester. She had this house built with 160 rooms, 2000 doors, 47 fireplaces and 40 staircases because she thought Native American spirits were trying to kill her. Her intentions were to confuse the spirits so they could not find her and harm her. The house is said to be haunted not only by Mrs. Winchester herself, but anyone who has ever been killed by a Winchester gun. Also, the house is said to be a haven at which spirits feel welcome ... they come and go as they please. Manifestations occur, along with ghost lights, noises, and phantom music occur. The house is open to the public on appointment. For more information on the Winchester Mystery House, visit Winchester Mystery House, the official site with more information about tours than the background of the house itself, or Winchester Mystery House! by Prairie Ghosts, which focuses more on the ghosts and spirits of the house.

DUDLEYTOWN, CONNECTICUT: This ghost village in northwestern Connecticut, which has been abandoned since 1924, is thought to be haunted by several ghosts who were murdered or committed suicide there. Ghost sightings have been reported, as well as ghost lights and cold spots. Dudleytown was built over a Mohawk Indian burial ground. The town is supposedly cursed, and those who enter it can carry the bad luck with them for years. For more on Dudleytown, see Legend of Dudleytown, which is an informative site with a lot on the history of Dudleytown that attempts to disprove the idea of it being haunted, or The Curse of Dudleytown, with stories of ghosts and pictures of the damned village.

THE WHITE HOUSE, D.C.: The ghosts of Abraham Lincoln and Willie Lincoln, who died when he was 12, have been spotted, as well as numerous other presidential and unidentified ghosts. Cold spots and strange auras have been reported. Also, strange laughter has been heard coming from the Rose Room, which was Andrew Jackson's bedroom. Surprisingly, I didn't find a lot of information on the Web about the haunted White House. I did dig up About.com: Paranormal Phenomena and the White House, and Are There Ghosts Haunting the White House?, a short CNN reported article.

DOVER, MASSACHUSETTS: Dover is haunted by the infamous Dover Demon. The Dover Demon has a huge head, large, glowing eyes, and long, thin, lanky arms and legs. Several teenagers first encountered it in April of 1977. He has been seen walking on a stone wall near the road, and in a forest. The Demon had no hair, and was a beige color, and about the size of a monkey. See The Cryptozoo: Dover Demon and Dover Demon for the whole story.

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS: Hull House, which is located at 800 South Halstead Ave, is now a museum. It is haunted by hooded ghosts which are seen on the staircase. In the early 1900's, a "Devil baby" with horns and a tail was born here, and ghost hunters report taking strange photographs and collecting ectoplasm here. The Devil Baby is a violent phantom. These sites may be of further help: The Shadows of Chicago: Hull House and The Monks of Hull House, which includes a photograph of one of the hooded phantoms.

AREA 51, NEVADA: (This is not technically a haunted place, I know, but certainly famous.) Last heard to be located 90 miles north of Las Vegas, Area 51, also known as Groom Lake, Area 51 is a military base which is said to hold UFO's, aliens, and top-secret military craft. There are fences all around the place, and people are not even allowed to go on some of the land that surrounds it. In certain places, photography is prohibited. If you are found tresspassing on the grounds, the Cammo Dudes (Area 51 security) have free reign to shoot you, and it's perfectly legal. The government, of course, denies that Area 51 hold any proof of extra-terrestrial life. For more information on Area 51, check out Above Top Secret, which also includes extensive information on other government conspiracies, and UFO Mind Area 51, a thorough Area 51 database.

ROSWELL, NEW MEXICO: (This is also not a haunted place, but also famous, as well.) On July 3, 1947 the wreckage of a crashed UFO was found by William Brazel. The day before, he heard a loud explosion doring a storm that came from the area where he found the downed UFO. The material was metallic and shiny, and very light. It was bendable, and could not be dented with a sledgehammer. Some of the pieces of metal had strange symbols on them. Brazel contacted the air base near Roswell, who sent Jesse Marcel out to collect all he could from the crash. The first press release stated that a flying saucer has crashed near Roswell, and all the stories about UFO's and such were true. The very next day, however, the story changed. It was now just a downed weather balloon. The gover denied, and continues to deny, any knowledge of a UFO crashing near Roswell. For more information on Roswell, check out The Roswell Incident and The Roswell Incident, two different websites with a plethora of information. The latter boasts its own chat room.

There is even a road sign where the best place to view the lights is. The first record of a witness to the Marfa Lights was in 1883. For more information, check out Marfa Lights Online or The Marfa Lights.

SKAGWAY:Heres a story of a haunted place near where I live: Skagway, Alaska, is about 200 miles from where I live, and they have a very interesting legend there. In the late 1800s, Skagway was a mining boom town, and it had its share of glory and gold. There was a man named Soapy Smith, who would kill miners and steal their gold. He was eventually shot by the city sherrif, but only after he took many lives... the day of his death is celebrated as a holiday in the city of Skagway. Anyways, the hotel of that era still stands, and supposedly it is haunted by the spirits of those killed by Soapy Smith. I have talked to the workers there, and heard their stories. Broken chandeliers, visions in the night, so forth. And guests who have been attacked.... of course the hotel doesn't want you to know about that. Anyways, its a well known story in Alaska.... one I believe. Thank you to Bloodthirsty69@hotmail.com for sending this haunted place in!

MIDDLEBURY: Route 63 running from Middlebury, Ct through Lenox, Mass. Is Extremely active. There have been numarouis sightings iver the years, one such story is of the "Leather Man" who wanders the route in search of food and a place to stay. It is considered to be a very bad thing to not invite him in if he is sighted. Many people have reported walking the route at night and upon hearing a shuffling gait, turning to find no one there. This is the same area (geographically) in which Dudley Town is located. Those of us who have grown up there do not even speak the name of the town for fear of the curse. I feel I am taking a chance to write the name. No one who knows the area will go there... only tourists who do not know all of the details venture in. No one walks route 63 alone at night, especially in the Berkshire Foothill area...Watertown to Lenok and Torrington. In the Summer, you can just feel the energy. It was an old stage coach route and it has alot of history.

STEVENAGE: Monks Wood, just outside north London. Around the year 1971-72 there was a very big scare about this wood. People began to claim to see, suprisingly enough, Monks. I dont know what the previous name was or maybe it's always been called this? The sightings were very well published in the local paper. Nobody tried to cover it up.
