I'm a beginner and a little overwhelmed. But your site is great. The tanks are stunning. I am simply trying to keep 3 goldfish alive and thriving this winter, then back to the pond in the spring. Tank (55 gal) has been running for a month, fish put in just over a week ago. I can't get the nitrites under control (5 ppm) after 2 partial water changes. No ammonia present which confuses me. If you have any advise, please let me know. Thanks. Cathy

Hello, Hoa. I see you around on the aquaria groups on usenet every once in awhile, but I thought I'd let you know that I've been visiting the site for some time now and always like to check back for reference or to look for updates. You've got a lot of seful info here because you do a great job of explaining what you've done to have a successful planted tank rather than simply repeat the stuff found at the seemingly countless other aquaria sites. I especially like your comments of various fish and plan s and what they are doing in your tank. This provides a first-hand view of the inhabitants rather than just an atlas description (not that those are bad). I also like the fact that you list the books that you think are some of the best. With the many t tles available, it's good to hear recommendations from someone that has seen and read lots of them. One way or another, I seem to now own nearly every book you recommend. I currently have one 38-gal tank that is becoming heavily planted with DIY CO2, 72w lighting, hang-on-side filter. The tank sat sparsely planted (java fern, moss) with the factory lighting for 3 years, but now I'm trying to make it what I always wanted i to be. Yours is one of the most useful aquaria pages in my bookmarks (I've got lots). Congrats on a great site and I'll see ya 'round the discussion groups. -Kank (Robert Brookshire)

About me: I am 27, I study web design at college. I work 2 jobs: Fish shop on Sundays, Indoor Snow Ski Instructor on Saturdays. About fish: Well I love fish, I've kept tropical fish for nearly 2 years. I am always trying to learn as much about them as I can, and share that info with beginners. I am a member of the South Australian Native Fish Society, which is a conservationist/ho by group. When I work at the LFS on weekends and almost always spend my pay before I get out the door! I have 2 planted 30" tanks. One is a sort of 'Amazon biotope', it has various schools of tetras, Bolivian Rams & Checkerboard Dwarf's, Bristlenose & som Swordtails (yes, they are good at surface skimming aren't they!) The other tank has many Australian & New Guinea Natives, Rainbows, Gudgeons, Hardyheads, Gobies, Pygmy Perch. This tank has the most plants & I been trying to get my DIY CO2 working, but y ur site has fixed all that! Your site: Well, what can I say? Simply excellent. Thankyou so much for taking the time and effort to produce such a great site. I regard your recommendations as gospel. I will put your yeast CO2 advice to good use until I can afford to buy the other type that you've listed. And by the looks of things I need to start buying some of those great books. Thanks again, Eugene

Amazing site!! Thanks for creating it. I'm attempting to interest my children (10 and 12 year young girls) in an aquarium. I'm at the early stage of trying to clean the white scum off the glass. It's soaking in vineger now. I may try the muriatic aci as suggested at other web sites next. It's remarkably resistant to the razor blade. My main point is that you've made a wonderful site and should be proud of it. Congratulations! David

Hi Hoa, My name Is Thanh, I am a beginner aquarist and I am in a process of setting up a 150 Gallons planted fish tank for the first time. I know nothing about tank setup and all the troubles you have to go through to have a good looking planted tank. I hope I do 't make the same mistakes as all beginners do. Your site is very nice and the notes are very helpful for beginners like myself. The setup I am going to have is 60X24X24 with an overflow filter box at one end on the right hand side (center only). Some people don't like the idea of an overflow because it reduces the CO2 level. I plan to use the CO2 tank setup just as you suggested. t could be a home brew CO2 or Co2 tank. The problem is I don't like to swap CO2 Tank for each refill.( My brother has a planted tank with the CO2 said that some places demanded that he trades in his tank. He has not find a place that would refill CO2 on is tank yet) Well, Thanks for all the good tips. All the explanations are quite clear and Very well done! Regards, Thanh Nguyen

Fabulous site. Lots of great information. I got my 29 high tank at a garage sale, for myself and my dad (he is 70 and had been talking about the aquarium at his favorite tavern). My husband and mom could care less, but dad and I love it. I'm bookmarking this site to refer back to. Thank you for all of your time and effort. I especially appreciated the very clear drawings and instructions for the do it yourself CO2 and aquarium canopy. I love saving money, and I love a time-consuming project even more. I recently started a mosquito larvae brooder after reading on the newsgroups that mosquito larvae were an excellent food for aquarium fish. This was proven after I found some wigglers in a tank that I had allowed to fill with rain water on the deck. I ut a dozen or so wigglers in the tank and they were consumed in nano seconds.

I really enjoyed your sight! It's very nicely set up. And your pictures are beautiful! I also have a particular interest in getting large clown loaches and plants to coexist, and it sounds like you have some growing clowns. I have a couple of anecdotal stories that I may post at the APD at some point. Basically, if you feed them at night with pellets and broken up algae tablets, they'll leave the plants alone for the most part. But if they should get bored (I don't think the behavior of my fat clowns s motivated by hunger), they'll have a field day ripping off small leaves and new growth. -Carmen

Your web site is very helpful. I used to get the same oxygen-bubbling plant growth without CO2 additions. I lived in central Texas, and the water, which most considered hard, but in which I could grow almost any species of plant, had a carbonate content that either yielded CO2 the plan s could use or helped keep a high CO2 content in the water. It was marvalouse and trouble-free. Made good coffee, too.

Hi, I was into tropical fish/plant aquariums many years ago. I am thinking about getting into the hobby again as I am now retired. Things appear to have changed substantially over the years. We used to buy a plant, stick it in the aquarium and hope it w uld grow. (not too many did!) My wife and I moved from San Diego in Dec. 97. Lived in SD since 1942. I found your site most informative. Your tanks are very beautiful. Noted your reference to "Fountains", I used to buy quite often from them. Are they still on University Ave? We will be in SD in early March, would you entertain a visit? I would like to see your aquariums in person. Thanks Jim

Very nice, beautiful tank. I hope mine will look as good some day I'm new to computers, but I've kept fish for 40 years. I'm in the process of setting up a 10,and 55 gallon tanks. Got inspired buy a hang on the tank wet\dry filter I bought, to build a large {power o open top canister} filter. It will be the same length and higth of the tank it will service, and three or four inches deep{front to back}. It will be powered by a adjustible flow rate mini pump. The idea is to give the filter enough surface to use up as uch of the O2 and supply enough CO2 so I won't have to use an expensive CO2 bottle. I also plan to use an under gavel filter using a small air pump at a very slow rate, instead of heating cables. the air pump should provide enough O2 at night. For my subs ate, I plan to use flourite with fiber glass screening to keep it from falling though the filter plate slots. The return on the large outside filter will be below the surfice to keep as much of the CO2 in the water. I don't know if this will work as well s I hope, but I think it just might. I'll let you and every one else know when I get it set up and working. This is my first time I've written anyone. Let me know what you think, if you would like.

I am very impresses with your site. It contains a lot of useful information and first hand experiences about planted tanks. I kept tropical fish for a couple of years in my teens, but after a 15+ year gap, I set up a 40g tank about 6 months ago and am experimenting with plants and how to beat algae. I've just upgraded my lights, and right now I'm in the process of switching o er from a UGF to an internal power filter, and am thinking about adding substrate nutrients and what types of plants I should try next. I had one observation on your site. On the page where you show a photograph of the plants and a numbered 'key' as to what the plants are, perhaps you could order/ number the bulleted list that follows where you describe your experiences with that type of plant. This would make it easier to cross check the description of experiences with the picture. Just a thought. Keep up the good work - I'll check back soon. Pete.
