Waiheke

Luckily I was able to get a ride to the ferry with Camel and her sisters so we could go to Waiheke to help the Waiheke Guides learn outdoor skills. The morning was cold and the trip over was calm. On arriving at the Waiheke passenger wharf I had to put on my Ranger scarf before Mike noticed us. He took us on a quick tour of Waiheke to the main shopping area, their carrot coloured space ship and main school. At the vineyard, where Jean (the Guide Leader) was staying and the Guide Day was happening, we dumped our gear in the house before setting off down the vineyard to set up the wide game. At 10:30am the guides started arriving. They were split up into three groups. My group did the Scout's pace (60 paces walking, 60 paces running for 1.5 km while remembering an instruction) wide game (where they had to remember a series of clues to get a picture made up), block building and name tag making before lunch. The guides ate lunch with the radio on. After lunch the group of Guides I had previously taken learnt flagskills and formalities plus two new knots. The last bit of the afternoon was spent doing the boring look through the book stuff while the leaders and patrol leaders had a meeting. Camel and I built an outdoor fire on which we cooked bananas and chocolate. For dinner we helped make a rice and vegetable dish. Early the next morning we got up and ready to leave with Mike who was going to Auckland on the car ferry. We were dropped off safely home after a wonderful interesting day on Waiheke.
