| SCARY WORLD AIDS FACTS It is estimated that 40 Million people are living with HIV/AIDS at the end of 2002. Five Million were diagnosed with HIV in 2002. There were approximately three million AIDS deaths in 2002. Over 14 million children were made orphans because of AIDS by the end of 2001. The American Association of World Health estimates that in India the number of new infections is DOUBLING every 14 months and that by 2010 India will overtake South Africa as the nation with the most people living with HIV/AIDS. The number of AIDS cases in China is growing by nearly 30% each year. The American Association of World Health estimates that nearly 10 million Chinese will be HIV positive or have AIDS by 2010. In August, 2001 AIDS was recognized as currently being the leading cause of death in Thailand. World wide it is estimated that over 1 in every 100 persons (greater then 1%) ages 15 to 49 is HIV positive. An estimated 40 million people have become infected with the HIV virus that leads to AIDS. The majority of people in the world who are living with HIV/AIDS are heterosexual. SCARY FACTS ABOUT AIDS IN THE UNITED STATES The Centers for Disease Control estimate that there have been over half a million AIDS deaths in the United States alone including over five thousand AIDS deaths of children under 15 years old. AIDS is the leading cause of death for African Americans ages 25 to 44. AIDS is the second leading cause of death for Latinos ages 25 to 44. In 1999 women constituted 23% of all AIDS cases in the United States. Women represent the fastest growing group of new HIV infections in the United States. An estimated one in 13 people living with AIDS is over age fifty and that over a quarter are unaware of their condition but can still spread the disease. The Centers for Disease Control estimate that 15% of men infected with HIV were infected through heterosexual sex including oral and vaginal sex. In 2000 the Centers for Disease Control estimate that over 2.2 million people in the United States are HIV positive and that 25% of those who are HIV positive are totally unaware of their condition but can still spread the disease. SCARY FACTS ABOUT AIDS PREVENTION The rate of condom failure has been rated at between 2% and 35%. | WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT AIDS?!?!? |
| 1. Educate Yourself (and others) There are eight (8) 1-800 numbers and twelve (12) educational web site links as well as six (6) personal web site links on this page take the time to call the numbers and read the web sites. 2. Protect Yourself Practice "Safer Sex" (there is no such thing as Safe Sex") and change any behavior on your part that might cause you to become infected. If you are HIV positive then change any behaviors that might lead to the spread of this disease. 3. Get Tested for HIV If you have ever done anything that might lead you to become infected with HIV then take the time to have yourself tested. Better to know now so that you can take care of your health and prevent the further spread of the disease then to live in ignorance develop AIDS earlier and die from it earlier not to mention infecting others. 4. Refuse To Tolerate Ignorance If you should hear someone say something ignorant, homophobic or just plain stupid be it in someone in your family, your church or at work correct them. Ignorance can get you killed. 5. Support AIDS Research and Education Write your congressman asking him to support AIDS research and education. When you give to charities give to AIDS education and research groups. 6. Volunteer Get involved in you community. volunteer for AIDS home hospice and AIDS support programs. Create an AIDS awareness web site (like this one). |
