UNUSUAL PORTRAIT OF PAPA, PAMPLONA,1959
(On 13" x 19" Watercolor Paper)
This unusual portrait of Ernest Hemingway was taken by writer/photographer Robert F. Burgess during Hemingway's last Fiesta of San Fermin at Pamplona, Spain, in 1959. Hemingway gave him permission to take photographs of him, "As long as you don't ask me to pose."
In this shot, Hemingway is talking animatedly with friends at his table. Notice the intensity of his eyes. The original photograph has been enlarged to emphasize Hemingway's face. Viewed close, the photograph's almost painterly daubs of black and gray make it appear to be an Impressionist painting. But nothing whatsoever has been done to increase or add to this effect. As one steps back from the portrait, like magical pieces of a puzzle, the daubs merge into the rugged features of this unusual Nobel Prize-winning author.
Printed on heavy matte 13 x 19-inch Radiant White Watercolor Paper, it is bright white with dark image tones, slight texture and non-glare surface. The image is 12-inches wide by 13-inches high. A half-inch of white edge appears on each side, and three inches of white appear at top and bottom so that it can be trimmed, matted and framed easily. As with all works of art, this print should be framed under glass and kept out of strong sunlight for longevity.
Each print is created one at a time. The photographer hand-signs and numbers each Limited Edition print on its back. No copyright notice appears on the face of the print as in the above illustration.
