Many rumors come to life in the world of AB's, and most of them turn out to be untrue. Most of them come from the same sources time and time again, which is not surprising, knowing the sources. The key words here are "allegedly" and "rumor". Read this page with a grain of salt and a sense of humor. If you perceive truth in anything here... you just might be a veritable Bulldogger...

For example, the rumor floated around, and was even printed in an American Bulldog publication, that the office of NABA President was up for reelection. A lifetime position cannot be usurped.

Rumors also run deep as to the components of Applegate's Vader Red. Vader is registered in the stud files of the NABA, which should give a clue as to what he is made of. Many are still skeptical. Perhaps time will reveal the truth.

It is not true that Rode Hawg Kennel boils and eats dogs. It has been found out that they roast them to retain more flavor. Nor are there dog fighters living in the Kennel's basement; they have all died and the bodies have decomposed.

The above named Kennel's supposed ghost dogs are all alive and doing well. The public is cordially invited to come put on a sleeve and take a ghost bite from any one of them, especially Bandit the ghost Dogo.

It is true that the Editor of The WATCHKEEPER has multiple personalities. Unfortunately, therapy cannot be afforded due to the non-milling of dogs at the Kennel where the magazine is sequestered.

The rumor that Rode Hawg's infamous head of operations was seen throwing live puppies on a burning bonfire as the ASPCA hauled off every dog on the property is not true. It is believed that the puppies were throwing the ASPCA on the burning bonfire as the other dogs hauled off the CEO!

Unfortunately, the following rumors are true:

1. Somewhere in the deep south a new hunting AB has come out of the woodwork. Apparently, it consists of AB mixed with Beagle. The cross of Beagle is supposed to make them more stealthy in the woods, but this defies the persona of the Beagle as it is a known bayer. Keep your eyes peeled for a short legged AB with strange bone structure.

2. On the west coast, a certain well known trainer has been caught adding Pit Bull Terrier to the AB mix.

3. A well known breeder from the northern states was caught through DNA testing to have multiple sires of different breeds in one litter. They were all passed off as ABs. There will be no registration papers issued, it is said, and the breeder has apparently fled the area in search of warmer climes.

4. Another well known breeder was caught through DNA testing with absolutely none of the blood that was said to be used in a particular breeding.

5. A certain well known author/breeder that produced a certain litter of ABs about 2 years ago has recently surfaced after many months trying to remain incognito due to a few deals gone bad and some poorly chosen words. Only one or two dogs out of the litter have not been hip x-rayed, but the rest have and it is said that entire hip parts are missing or there is massive dysplasia present. The blood allegedly goes back to "Rip-N-Woody".

6. A certain Midwesterner posing as a breeder is on the hunt for any and all who may be considered competitors in the puppy sales arena. The word on the street is get your legalities in order and your yard white-glove spiffy as this individual will use any method, regardless of how dirty, to shut down the competition cold. The grapevine tells a tale of baldfaced lies and a scam in the name of personal gain. A genetically flawed program allegedly based on one dog will set the stage for sales of the future. This individual professes a partner in crime who is none other than that other guy whose claim to fame is one dog. So, in light of all this, remember the adage "loose lips sink ships".

The following rumors are oldies, but goodies. These are also true.

1. The "Bullmead's Queen" in Johnson bulldog pedigrees refers to an Olde English Bulldogge, and one that wasn't wanted in the Olde gene pool, to boot. Bullmead is the kennel prefix used by Dave Leavitt, the modern day father of the Olde English Bulldogge. It is not certain how the litter wound up on J.D.'s front porch, but it is certain that Mr. Leavitt didn't mind giving them away. The only good in all this is that Mr. Johnson didn't pretend the infusion never happened, as is the case with most other known infusions.

2. The "Westchamp's High Hopes" that appears in Johnson bulldog pedigrees, one generation removed from the Bullmead name, is a full-blooded English Bulldog that was used in the creation of the Oldes. It is alleged that this particular ancestor brought diminished health and lost agility to the Johnson gene pool, and many prominent AB persons feel that the splitting of the breed into Johnson and Standard types couldn't have come soon enough.

Stay tuned for further developments in the AB Rumor Mill...

Warning on Dysplastic Bitch with pups on Long Island

Jacquie Pearson of Port Jefferson Station (she tells people Setauket), Long Island, New York, has a litter for sale, which she is advertising in Newsday, out of Jon-Jac's Jubilee. Jubilee is a wonderful, well-tempered, gorgeous bitch with a bad knee and hip dysplasia. How do I know? I bred her. I've written articles for the AB Review about that litter, because it was such a disaster and I learned so much about the importance of hip certification and ethical breeding practices from it. The litter was out of my bitch, Baby (since spayed) and my dog, Dallas (since neutered). It produced Jubilee, who you might remember me bringing to shows several years ago, Cosmo, who everyone at Al Joye's first few shows remembers and several other dogs. EVERY ONE OF THE DOGS FROM THAT LITTER WERE DYSPLASTIC!! Starting with Dallas Jr. who was put down with severe dysplasia at only 9 months of age. When Dallas Jr. was put to sleep, I called every family who had pups out of that litter. Every one had their dog's xrayed and all came up dysplastic. There were a lot of broken hearts and a lot was learned, except by Jacquie Pearson, who refused to xray Jubilee because she "could tell from looking at her that she is fine".

At that time, she told me she intended to breed Jubilee. She did produce a litter with Jubilee about a year ago. The stud dog was provided by Peter Maldanado, secretary for the North American Bulldog Club and owner of Pickford American Bulldogs. This was astonishing to me because only a year or so earlier, before Pete and I became enemies over this hip issue, I had Jubilee at their house and told Pete and his wife, Eileen, what Jacquie planned to do, despite the track record of that litter. Eileen Maldanado acted horrified at the thought of it. I guess the almighty dollar was more important than the health of the American Bulldog breed, because they did stud their dog, Mr. Famous Amos with Jubilee and produced a litter of pups. After these pups were sold, Jubilee blew her knee out chasing a goat. When Jacquie took her to the vet to get it checked out, she also had her hips shot. She called me up and told me Jubilee was dysplastic and she couldn't believe I was right. I was still being kind to her as I felt she was being misled by greedy people who wanted stud fees and that finally she was seeing the light. I told her not to worry, to call the folks who bought her pups and recommend
that they get the pups checked out and to spay Jubilee. She said, "Spay Jubilee?!!....I have to breed her to pay for her hip surgery!".

I was horrified and washed my hands of Jacquie Pearson that day.
I never heard another thing about her until last week when I received a phone call from folks wanting information on the AB and Jacquie Pearson. They told me that they had a deposit on a pup out of Jubilee and a dog named Tank (not the German's Tank) and that they were worried because Jacquie contradicted herself alot. Then they told me the speech Jacquie gave them about how the AB is a dysplastic breed which is required so the dog doesn't get hurt boar hunting. I've heard this STUPID speech a million times from the STUPID people who are STUPID and ignorant enough to believe this s--- that was preached to them by a certain group, here on Long Island who constantly have ads in
Newsday for pups and promote this idea to their rather large and ignorant following.

Now, lest you think that I am writing this to get puppy sales for myself, I am not. It has taken me 4 years to find excellent ABs to breed and I have deposits on my next two litters. I am taking no more deposits and no more names for the waiting lists. I have worked very hard to prove that my dogs are worth breeding and to find dogs to IMPROVE the breed. I am just upset that Jubilee is cruelly being bred, which is difficult at best on a dysplastic bitch, and it is extremely frustrating for me when people visit my club all excited to work their ABs that can't walk, that are shy and timid and scared, that are severely undersized, that have terrible skin problems and that were bred and purchased here on Long Island.

Please stay away from this litter with Jubilee and save yourself a heartache. Do I want Jacquie Pearson stuck with puppies? Yes I do, because then maybe she won't breed my poor Jubilee (who I miss with all my heart as she and I got very close when I took her to shows) again. Please forgive me for rambling.....I'm upset over this situation (that I feel partially responsible for)and don't know how to fix it.
