Xena was born in the village of Amphipolis, which was raided when she was a young girl. Though she escaped the physical ravages of the war, the mental effects molded her young mind. After her brother Lyceus' death, Xena left her homeland, in search of her own power. |
Xena found the power she was seeking in her own army, where she ruled supreme. Her skills were known world wide, and hearts trembled at the mention of her name. She was invincible |
Never one to remain idle, Xena continued to hoan her warrior skills, mimicking the best of her friends and foes and perfecting their techniques. So, if you ever wondered exactly HOW Xena climbs a tree like a ladder, or flips 30 feet into the air .... stop. These are not just stunts added with no premise. These are techniques taught to Xena over the years by various mentors. These mentors influence Xena immensely, though at the time she did not realize it. It was not until much later that she could grasp and understand the meaning of certain lessons brought to her. |
As Xena continued to travel, and her army continued to grow, she joined forces with a warlord named Borias. Together they plotted and plumaged, taking what they wanted, and planned for more conquests. During this time Xena became pregnant with Borias' child. They kept this from their army and enemies, concerned that her 'condition' would be viewed as a weakness. Though Borias occasionally hinted at the"L" word, Xena continued to put him off. There was no room for love her her plans. |
Close to the end of Xena's pregnancy, Borias made a treaty with the Centaurs. He believed this was a good way to increase the strength and power of his army. But other people wanted other things, and while Xena lay inside a hut, giving birth to their son, Solan, Borias was murdered by a servant, whose previous homeland had been destroyed by Xena |
Xena escaped with her child, and brought him to the leader of the Centaurs, hoping that the world would never know of the boy. His heritage would be too much of a burden for him. It is during this time that we start to see the glimmer of light with in Xena. |
Xena traveled again, fighting battles on the outside, and the inside. At one point she encountered Hercules. Being a warlord, she wanted to rid the world of Hercules, in the process gaining more power for herself. She attempted this by seducing Iolaus, Herc's best friend. But her plans were thwarted, and the three parted ways. |
Xena always tried to maintain a code of ethics, which prevented her from killing women and children. During one battle, her then lieutenant, Darphus, ignored that code, and Xena decided to abandon her army. She was put through "The Gauntlet", a punishment for leaving the army, which no one had ever survived. Xena did, and remains the only person to have done so. |
Now the fire of good began to burn so hot within her, it was impossible to ignore it. The past lessons began to reveal themselves to Xena, and she finally began to accept them. She again crossed the path of Hercules and Iolaus, who helped to direct her down the path she was destined for. |
Xena once again sets out to travel. She had no intention of rallying for good, but knew she could not stand by and watch innocent people get hurt. This was harder than she expected, for her past reputation prevented people from trusting her motives. |
As she traveled through one village, there arose an opportunity to take a stand, and she did. The villagers were extremely leary, going so far as asking her to leave if they gave her a wagon full of loot. With her stoic look, she brushed away the offer and defeated her foe, Draco, who was once an ally. Interestingly enough, she did not kill him, but out-smarted him using her 'many skills'. |
As she prepared to depart the village, a young girl named Gabrielle begged her to let her accompany her. But Xena was against it. She saw no reason for a traveling companion. She believed she was meant to travel her lifes path alone. And so, she left the village, and the girl, behind. |
Not to be put off, Gabrielle followed Xena. She was sure they would make a good team. The road was rough, and Gabrielle found herself in more than one tight spot. But, blessed with the gift of 'gab' (coincidence?) she managed to outwit the witless. She befriended Xena once more, and was finally allowed to hang around, for a while. |
Since then, Xena has come to depend on Gabrielle more than anyone. Through their struggles, they formed a bond that could not be broken, though many have tried. Some try to lure Xena back to her old ways, including Ares, the god of War (and Hercules' brother). But Xena stands firm in her beliefs, and continues to fight for the greater good. |
At one point it became prudent for Xena to reveal to Gabrielle that she had a son. Not long after, Gabrielle gave birth to a child herself. Her name is Hope, and she is the result of a union between Gabrielle and the evilest of gods, Dahak. The entire pregnancy takes mere weeks, and the child grows extremely rapidly. |
Xena is convinced the child is evil, and insists that Gabrielle kill it. Though Gabrielle sees the evil on occasion, she cannot bring herself to murder her daughter, and instead, sets her adrift in a basket on a stream, but she allows Xena to believe the child is dead. |
This is the premise for the most trying times the friends will have to endure. |
It all began while Xena and Gabrielle were visiting Xena's son, Solan. Hope, using the powers passed to her from her father, revived Callisto (my favorite bad girl), who seeks revenge on Xena for her misery, (Xena raveged her village and Callisto has never gotten over that ... but that's another web page!) |
The child, now approximately 10 - 12 years old, ( I told you, she grew fast!) reveals herself to Gabrielle. Because Gabrielle believes that Calllisto is there to kill all of the children, she hides Hope with Solan, wanting only to protect her daughter. But Hope murders Solan, and in the process, creates a rift in the friendship of Xena and Gabrielle. |
Xena feels betrayed, and mourns the loss of her son, who never knew her as his mother. Gabrielle, finally feeling Hopes evil, feeds her poison. Both women stand together, watching their childrens funeral pyres burn, and then they part ways, believing, because of the betrayal, that the friendship is over.. |
Shortly thereafter, as Xena is overcome with rage at Gabrielles betrayal, she tries to murder her. She takes her out of the Amazon vilage where Gabrielle is trying to come o terms with the past, and drags her behind her horse to a cliff, where she prepares to throw her off. |
Instead, they are both thrown into a strange world, were they must confront both of their mistakes and pain. Once they do, they emerge with a stronger bond than ever. They also learn that it was the spirit of Solan that brought them there, to mend their friendship |
And they continue to walk their lives path together. |
