Earth Caretakers

Earthshine Mountain Lodge and Earthshine Nature Programs presents: Earth caretakers--a research and conservation program educating you about wildlife in peril. When you visit Earthshine you may get the chance to join Steve or one of our other knowledgeable guides on an expedition to collect turtle DNA, frog, toad or salamander slime and more!

Scientists want to know more about all sub species of box turtle so a researcher at the University of Texas at Tyler is gathering box turtle DNA from all over the range of the box turtle--and that is most of the east coast form Maine to Florida and west to the Mississippi river! Earthshine is sending DNA samples from all of our resident un-releasable turtles and as many wild turtles that we can find. We take the DNA by clipping a tiny end of a claw or two that does not hurt the animal in any way. Check out this video of DNA sampling at Earthshine Lodge!

Amphibians such as frogs, toads and salamanders are dieing all over the planet due to a mysterious fungus that is is essentially a frog plague. It kills entire local populations of frogs and has already rendered several species extinct. Extinction is forever so we at Earthshine have stepped up to bat. It is our turn to make a difference and do all that we can to help wildlife in peril and the amphibians are surely in need of our help. We have teamed up with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and started collecting samples of frog and salamander slime. This slime will be analyzed for the presence of the Chytrid fungus and hopefully we will not have any and the Earthshine frogs will continue to sing forever.

When you visit Earthshine please be sure to ask about how you can attend a special excursion with Steve to sample turtle DNA or frog slime and become an Earth Caretaker!
