SIMPLEST DEED

No doubt, most of us have considered handing out Christian tracts in the past and we may have even given out a few.   Yet, if we are BOLD enough to use tracts, it is a practice that can easily fall into disuse.  Simply put, it takes time and energy to pass them out and those are two items that we seldom have in abundance.

However, there are a few special Christians that take tracts very seriously, they leave the booklets in obvious places, pass them out to friends and strangers, and spend time praying for each soul that comes in contact with the tract; yes, some Christians make full use of this soul-winning weapon.  Such a Christian is the focus of this second and final instalment, I hope that this true story will inspire you (as it did me) and help to illustrate the power of a prayer and a single gospel tract.

Mr. Thomas Bach walked swiftly down the street of the old Danish village.  Like most engineers, Thomas always seemed to be in a hurry, tonight was definitely no exception.  In his mind he went over all the things on his ‘to-do’ list.  “Perhaps,”  he thought, “if I ever got caught up, I’ll take a vacation.”  Right now, however, catching up seemed to be as far away as the North Pole.

Suddenly, a lanky boy stepped out from the shadows and extended his hand toward the bustling Mr. Bach.  In the dim light of evening, the youthful engineer could barely make out the gaunt features of the child.  “Probably just another beggar,” Thomas gruffly said  to himself.

“Will you please take this leaflet?  It has a special message for you.”  The boy was offering him a tract.  Nothing could have infuriated this man more.  He hated religion, even more than he disliked the insolence of young boys.

“Message indeed!  Why do you bother other people with your religion?  I am quite able to take care of myself,”  He growled.

To his surprise, the lad did not run away after his outburst, instead he simply stayed on the path with the tract still extended.  This was more than the red headed engineer could take.  Without warning, Mr. Bach snatched the piece of paper out of the boy’s hand and began tearing the tract into a thousand pieces.  With a smug look of accomplishment he shoved the leaflet into his pocket.  With that done he waited for the boy to run away in humiliating defeat.

The young boy didn’t run, no, quietly he stepped into a nearby doorway, folded his hands, and began to pray!  Thomas Johannes Bach watched in utter amazement as tears began to flow down the cheeks of the youngster that he had been so cruel to.  The young man was praying for Mr. Bach’s soul!  In a instant, a cold, bitter heart was melted by the love of a true Christian.

Thomas soon gave up his career and went on to become a well-known missionary statesman, and a pioneer-missionary in South Africa.  For almost twenty years he headed The Evangelical Alliance Mission, and was directly responsible for thousands of converts to Christ.

A young boy and a tract is a very humble beginning for such a great ministry as that, but to God, Mr. Bach’s wonderful revivals in Africa are of no greater importance than the one soul that was won by a young boy who had the courage to stand alone on a dark street in Denmark and offer a busy stranger “. . . good tidings of great joy.” (Luke 2:10).  Little is much if God is in.
