“Truly my soul waiteth upon God: from him cometh my salvation.” Psalms 62:1
The Modern Church is likened unto the Israelites of old in many ways. Yet, often in our attempts to shed light on the shadows of the past we blind ourselves (purposefully perhaps) from the less glorious similarities that are seen throughout the history or Israel. We, like they, are continually murmuring and complaining of things that come. We fight against living a holy life before the almighty God and we yield ourselves to the master called “Lust.” Israel, too, had these problems and they were warned by the Prophets of Lord not to rebel against the commandments of God. Yet, still they faltered and fell but God, being full of mercy, forgave and forgot all that they had done. Not due to their good works or the fact that they prayed anymore then someone else, it was for one simple reason. For His Name’s sake. So wrote the Psalmist David, “Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity” (Psalms 32:2) and again in Hosea, “I will not execute the fierceness of mine anger, I will not return to destroy Ephraim: for I am God, and not man; the Holy One in the midst of thee.” (Hos. 11:9) You see, salvation is not something that can be gotten by hard work, there are many of hard working, church going people that will bust Hell wide open. It is something that only comes from the throne of the Living God, and only by belief in His name, Jesus Christ: “for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12)
I once was talking to a group of Christians (so-called most of them) and someone asked a question concerning the number of religions there are in the world and how someone might respond to that fact. I turned and said simply, “The world is made up of millions of different people, with millions of different plans, and millions of different idea's, yet in this multitude there is but ONE way of Salvation . . . Jesus Christ.”
Our text is not large, full of beautiful words, or even one of the most romantic of the Bible, yet it states simply the truth in a way that cannot be ignored. No matter how one tries to cut it up, change it, or wrestle with it, Psalms chapter 62 verse one will always truly tell us that salvation comes from no other, but God. Plain and simple. |
