Not Denied, Simply Justified

“There is a generation that is pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness”  Proverbs 30:12

There has been sin is every culture since the fall of Adam.  No single society has been free from theft, murder, lying, or sexual perversion.  The difference in cultures has always been their level of “tolerance” for the crimes or sins being committed.  Generally, the tougher the penalties; the fewer the number of criminals.

Also, a society could be judged by its ability to establish clear goals and rules for the common man.  A system that was the same for rich and poor; saint and sinner; created a sense of justice, and social standard.

There were thieves; but the thieves recognized their own sense of wrong.  Just because they stole, did not mean that they believed that stealing was right.  They accepted the fact that they transgressed the laws and would hide in shame if they were found out.

Today is different, however.  This is truly the generation that is “pure in their own eyes.”  Everyday I see and hear evidence of this truth.  Often employees will brag to co-workers about stealing something from the company or boss.  It’s something of a sport, and every theft is justified by the “I deserves it” rule.  Instead of hiding their deeds, they are open with their actions and feel no remorse, even when caught.

In the news, we see trial after trial of murderers proudly taking the stand and claiming innocense; not because they did not kill the person, but because they were “temporarily insane” or suffering some type of neglect or abuse.  The murder is not denied, simply justified.

So you see, we have not been “washed of our filthiness.”  The sins remain in our culture and in our conscious.  We make no real attempt to change or control ourselves, we simply chose to believe that we were not wrong after all.

The employee that steals is encouraged and strengthened by the positive feedback he receives from his co-workers.  The murderer feels pitied and “understood” by lawyers and therapists that tell her that she is absolutely right.

There is no shame of sin in today’s society.  The whites and blacks of absolute right and wrong has been replaced by grey areas of tolerance and social acceptance.  The jokes and scripts of modern shows can get as racy or provocative as they dare.  Film producers need not worry about blasphemous characters or sexual innuendos.  Parents think little of sending their children off to see these movies and even fewer actually question whether or not it is right to do so.

Simply put, we have gotten comfortable in our own filth.  Resisting temptation and following a high moral standard is “old-fashion” and out of style.  Today’s motto is “if it feels right, do it.”  Never mind the “old” rules and worry about the consequences later.

Yet, the rules haven’t changed.  Sin is still sin.  Right is right. Wrong is wrong.  And as for the consequences, they haven’t changed either.

“There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death”  Proverbs 14:12
