| “Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge” Proverbs 23:12 Today we received a new appliance in the mail. As we unpacked the contents, and laid the various pieces out on the table; I couldn’t help but notice how new and perfect each component was. The “factory-shine” was still there, and everything looked so nice and beautiful. And yet, the machine, itself had no practical purpose, if the parts remained in their current state. So with care we moved the pieces aside and rummaged through until we found a plain little booklet that was tossed in the bottom of the box. No brilliant colors illuminated the cover; just simple black and white print. No professional binding; only a single staple to keep the pages together. Yet, much importance was placed on this collection of pages; for without it, the beautiful pieces that were before us would be useless. With deliberation, we read each passage, before we attempted to assemble the machine. A few basic diagrams aided our understanding, and soon enough, every piece had been put in its proper place. With one last glance at the diagrams to make sure everything was correct, we folded the little booklet and put it in a handy spot. Surely, small problems will arise, and we want to know where to find the information to remedy each problem as it comes. The entire process didn’t take too long, and soon enough we all stood back and watched the machine begin working. As I stood there, I considered the importance of the “little instruction book.” Although plain and common, and now tucked away out of site, if not for it, our machine would not be up and running. This would be considered a “common experience” no doubt, and might seem a bit pointless to write about. But what struck me in that situation, is the importance that was placed on those instructions. How we esteemed them and followed so carefully, their every line. Yet, life comes with an “instruction book” as well, and so often we neglect, even to read it. Our lives come apart and fall to pieces, yet the instructions to mend them are seldom read or heeded. How is it that we can understand the importance of instructions in one way, and totally disregard their effect in another? The Holy Bible is the written Word of God to be understood by the common person. In fact, the King James Version can be read and comprehended by any average fifth grader. Its simple phrasing and clear instructions are meant to be guidelines in all aspects of our lives. Thousands of years have come and gone and the same set of instructions has guided countless generations and mended countless lives. Troubles and trials will come in this life. Just like our own little machine, things will break or get damaged and be in need of repair. Yet, if we establish our lives correctly (by following the instructions carefully the first time), and read the instruction book daily; every part of our being will benefit. Like a finely tuned machine, we will accomplish those things we are meant to do. Life is really a simple pattern; one body: one soul: one spirit: and a “little instruction book.” All of us are given the same basic pattern, with only slight variations in talent and ability. It’s not the parts we come with, it’s how well we follow the instructions |
