It has been often said that ”what you eat is what you are."  For the modern Christian there couldn’t be a better description.  I don’t mean what we eat for our physical body, I’m talking of what we allow our SPIRITUAL BODIES to consume every day.  We give our souls everything it needs to be sinful.  If we see something that looks good to the flesh (that is the sinful nature of man) we take it and eat it right down.  Remember Eve, in the Garden of Eden.  The Bible tells that ”when the woman SAW that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the EYES . . . she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat.” (Gen. 3:6 )  Here we find the root of the fall.  As soon as the forbidden became desired, lust was conceived and brought forth sin, sin when it was finished, brought forth death. (James 1:15)

Christians are the same way today!  If we SEE that the forbidden, that is to say the sin, is pleasant to the eyes of the flesh (flesh meaning carnality) we have, as the dictionary say’s:  ”A very . . . intense desire" to obtain the forbidden, in other words, lust is conceived.  At this point we’ll try and think of anything to justify consuming our desire.  Eve justified partaking of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, by not believing the word of God.  Thousands of years after Eve has seen corruption, an unnumerable amount of sin’s later, her children are using the same excuse.  When we see that something is good to the sinful lust of the flesh, we say to ourselves:  ”We ‘shall not surely die’ (Gen. 3:4) for how can this one sin kill us."  But in all of our reasoning, in all of our big words, it all comes down to one infallible truth.  ” the wages of SIN IS DEATH;" (Rom. 6:23), and just as Adam and Eve found out the moment sin was finished; the word of God never lies, WE SHALL DIE!!!!

Fleshly desires have always been sinful and as long as God is (and that’s eternal) they will be.  As the children of Light we must learn to set no wicked thing before our eyes. (Ps. 101:3 )  Christ said in Matt. 6:22-23 that, ”The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!"  God wanted his people to realize that their PHYSICAL and spiritual eyes must be on one thing only, singleness in sight, seeing only what Christ wants and desires.  We cannot profess with our lips the truth of God, yet still with our fruits profess the ungodliness of this sinful world..  ”For ALL that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the LUST OF THE EYES, and the pride of life, is not of the Father." (I John 2:16)  We must strive, ever continually, by and through the mighty name of Jesus Christ, to be ”Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect." (Matt. 5:48)  Christians must learn that God is IN us as we daily live, ”even,” as Paul stated, ” in thy mouth, and in thy heart." (Rom. 10:8)

So the next time that we begin to desire the forbidden, that is to say sin, let us ask the Holy Spirit that resides in all of us, is this what God would wont to see through my eyes.
Let Thine Eye be Single
