Environmental Quality In Bangor
This page is gonna be my Geography coursework done in yr 11.
I am going to:
- Establish if there are any differences in the environmental quality in Bangor,
- Determine if environmental quality increases with distance from the CBD,
- Establish a means of ranking in terms of environmental quality,
- Establish if some environmental feature are linked e.g. noise and traffic flow,
- Determine if environmental quality influences demand for housing,
- Determine if there is a link between environmental quality and house prices, and
- Determine if index of decay decreases from the CBD
Establishing if there are differences in environmental quality in Bangor
To find out if there are differences in environmental quality in Bangor, we went around Bangor giving points out of ten for: landscape, derelict land, litter/ vandalism, industrial premises, traffic flow, noise, air pollution, access to open space, and access to shops. We then recorded the results in a table and drew a graph.
From the graph we can see there is quite a range in the environmental quality of the 20 locations in Bangor but most of the locations lie near the line of best fit.
Determining if environmental quality increases with distance from the CBD
To find out if environmental quality increases with distance from the CBD, we measured the distance from each location in Bangor (inch) then we calculated the distance in miles. We then recorded the results in a table, ranked the results and drew a graph.
From the graph you can see from the line of best fit, as the Distance from the CBD increases the environmental quality also increases.
Establishing a means of ranking in terms of environmental quality
To find out a means of ranking in terms of environmental quality we drew a table with the location in one column and the environmental quality in another, we then sorted the environmental out in ascending order and ranked them we then sorted them back to the location.
Establishing if some environmental feature are linked e.g. noise and traffic flow
To find out if there is a link between some of the environmental features like noise and traffic, derelict land and litter/vandalism, air pollution and traffic flow, access to public open spaces and access to shops/primary schools we will draw graphs of the information.
There is not much correlation between the traffic flow and noise like I thought there would be as the more traffic the more noise created by the traffic but this is not the case here. I would expect that if there is derelict land there would be litter/vandalism because some people think that as no one lives there no one would care if there is any litter/vandalism. This seems true here. I would also expect there to be air pollution when there is traffic flow as the traffic produces a fare amount of pollution. This also seems like the case here. There is not much correlation, however, between the access to public open space and access to shops/public schools as I would have expected because if there is space for public open space there should be room for shops/primary schools. This does not seem true here.
Determining if environmental quality influences demand for housing
To find out if there is a link between environmental quality and demand for housing we recorded the results for the Environmental Quality and the amount of houses for sale and drew a graph.
From the results I can see that the Environmental Quality influences the amount of houses for sale in a negative way. I.e. when the environmental Quality decreases the amount of houses for sale decreases, therefore the demand for houses decreases.
Determining if there is a link between environmental quality and house prices
To see if there is a link between environmental quality and house prices we first have to list the house prices in a table.
From the results we can see that the line of best indicates that as the house prices increases the Environmental Quality increases, however, there are a few exceptions for example there is house which only coasts £33,500 but has an Environmental Quality of 52 and there is another house which coasts £73,000 and has an Environmental Quality of only 29.
Determining if index of decay decreases from the CBD
To find out if there is any difference between the index of decay and the distance from the CBD we record the total index of decay and the distance in a table and plot the graph. If the line of best fit slopes as shown then the index of decay decreases as the distance of the CBD increases, however, if the slope is vertical then the index of decay is the same as the distance increases
The results prove that the index of decay does not decrease as the distance from the CBD increases. They also show that the index of decay in Bangor is good in most areas.
These pictures are pictures of Victoria Park, which was the area I was assessing in Bangor. The picture at the top of this page is the University along the road between Victoria Park and Menai Avenue. This was the part of Victoria Park with the most litter. The picture below is of the houses along Victoria Park and well-kept private open land.
These pictures are of Bangor from Trem Elidir. As you can see Bangor is more oblong than most other towns, which is why the index of decay, environmental quality and the house prices are not affected as much by the distance from the CBD. Bangor is also at the bottom of a valley, which may also be the reason for this because it means that the town cannot be circular without building on rising land.
Analysis
The shape of the town affects the environmental quality, the index of decay and the demand for houses. As Bangor is not circular it means that the results may not be as typical as I had hoped. For example I would expect a wide variety of differences of the environmental quality in Bangor but even though there is a little difference it is not as much as I had hoped for, as I would expect to see that the points on the graph would be spread out and not crowded around the line of best fit. I would also expect the points on the graph of environmental quality and the distance from the CBD would be closer to the line of best fit, which would have quite a large slope. The results at 4) were good but the graph of access to public open space and access to shops/primary schools were not the results I would expect, this might be because.
Conclusion
The study could have been improved if the data was collected individually instead of a group as the people in the group would have different views on how much vandalism there is etc. it also means that the results are as reliable as you want because there may be some people in the group who are as not as reliable as others.
It could also be improved if the data collected was spread to areas near to Bangor but not in the town, e.g. Maesgerchan as this would give us details on the suburbs on the very outskirt of the town to see if that affected the results.
