The German Roller is bred for song competition all over the world and has been for 400 years! There are more than five regional winter contests throughout the continental United States and all are open to the general public. The rollers' main forte is the deep bass roll produced in the lower diaphragm and reverberated in the throat pouch. The deep voice also affects the pitch of other tours such as flute, schockle and hollow bell. Notes are rendered in varying pitch and in varying tempos of wavering, chuckling or glucking, beating and rolling. Of all birds, it has the best tonal quality.
The Belgian Waterslager is bred for song competition in the United States, Mexico, France, Belgium (of course) and, many other countries. A national song competition is held once a year in different "big city" locations across the country and is coordinated through face the National Cage Bird Association. The waterslager was first successfully promoted in the U.S.A. when the AWS was formed, circa 1990. The forte' of the waterslager is its pure tone, wavering voice, and a song resembling flowing water. Fantastic waterslager reproductions of rolling, plopping and bubbling water have fooled many into thinking they have leaky faucets!
