March
20, 2005
Dr.
Irene Tan Gacias recently passed the Physician (Complete and
Finals with Prelims) Licensure Examination given by the Board of
Medicine last February 2005. Irene or Ayen as she is fondly
called by her relatives and peers, is the only daughter of
Carlos Gacias of Barangay Dancalan and the former Florida Tan of
Barangays Central and Madlawon.
She
graduated with the second highest honors from Bulusan Central
School in 1991 and as salutatorian at then Colegio de la
Milagrosa (now St. Louise de Marillac College), Sorsogon City,
in 1995. She finished nursing, her pre-med course, at the
University of Santo Tomas in 1999 and passed the board exams
within the same year, after which she took up medicine proper at
Far Eastern University.
Irene
has been a regular volunteer in the annual civic action of
Damayan-Buluseño, Inc. and now that she has joined the ranks of
Bulusan's doctors, nothing less but her best could be expected
of her. (BCS

Glimpses

July
14, 2003
Glimpses
of Bulusan, an unofficial homepage of the Municipality of
Bulusan, Province of Sorsogon, Philippines
– through its Webmaster, affirms its full support to
the new website of the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Bulusan,
in response to a report in the March-May 2003 issue of the
Damayan-Buluseño Gazette by Mr. Albino Españo.
Mr. Españo together with Mr. Roswell H. Ramos attended a
3-day Website Development Training and Workshop at STI Computer
Center (Sorsogon Branch) last April 10-12, 2003.
Said
workshop was a joint project of the Provincial Government of
Sorsogon and the National Computer Center (NCC) under the
Department of Science and Technology (DOST).
Two representatives from each municipality attended and
were requested to bring their respective Socio-Economic Profiles
(SEFs). Such data
should thus be available at the following URL:
http://ecommunity.ncc.gov.ph/Bulusan
The
NCC was also authorized to register the following domain name:
http://www.bulusan.gov.ph
This
development in the local government is much appreciated by the
Webmaster as it would be a further boost to the town’s tourism
efforts. Online
Buluseños and other interested parties could also gain access
to more Bulusan-related information.
Congratulations,
LGU-Bulusan! Here’s to a successful cyber presence!

Roco
in Pista sa Maynila 2003
July
14, 2003
Former
senator and DepEd secretary Atty. Raul S. Roco graced the
Buluseños' Pista sa Maynila 2003 at the Knights of
Columbus Clubhouse in Intramuros, Manila yesterday. The
gathering is an annual affair organized by the
Damayan-Buluseño, Inc. (DBI), an association of Metro-Manila
residents from Bulusan, Sorsogon -- and is slated every second
Sunday of July, a few days before the actual town fiesta which
falls on the 25th of the same month.
Much
to the delight of all the Buluseños present, Atty. Roco started
his speech with a few lines from the Bicol song Haen Ka Na
Baya, and then gave out a cash prize to the one who was able
to solve his riddle on "the sound of a single clapping
hand". Lea Balderama, a DBI scholar from Barangay
San Bernardo, gave the right answer which is "the sound of
cooperation".
The
said brain-twister proved to be the central theme of his speech,
wherein he observed that through the Buluseños' cooperative
efforts, loud-sounding are the claps that emanate even from
single-handed members of the community.
The
distinguished Bicolano also urged the Buluseños to continue
with their brand of cooperation, especially with the
organization's scholarship program. He also expressed hope
that such an example and leadership be made known throughout the
entire province.
After
his speech, Roco, who requested another Bicolano song from the
DBI Angelus Choir, was awarded a plaque of appreciation "in
grateful acknowledgment of his presence" by the
organization led by DBI President Rogelio F. Fuentes.

Buluseña
Places 7th in Geodetic Engineering Board Exams
Edelyn
G. Fortes, the fifth child of Ruben Fortes of Barangays San
Isidro and Looban, and the late Salvacion Guevarra of Barangay
San Roque – ranked 7th among the 76 out of 187
examinees who took and successfully hurdled the Board
Examinations for Geodetic Engineers last January 16, 2003 in
Manila. It was
indeed a close fight that with a general rating of 85.40, Edelyn
was just 1.40 points behind the 1st placer.
A
consistent achiever since her elementary days at the Bulusan
Central School where she graduated with the top honors in 1991,
Edelyn has been bringing home honors not only for herself but
also for her family, friends, school, and to her hometown.
She continued her winning streak at the Ramon Magsaysay
High School (Cubao) where she eventually graduated
Valedictorian in 1995, and at the University of the Philippines
in Diliman, Quezon City where she finished her undergraduate
studies. (BCS
Classmate 1991)

Po
Preparations
On for Pista sa Maynila 2003
Officers
of the Damayan-Buluseño, Inc. (DBI), a non-stock, non-profit
association of Metro-Manila residents from Bulusan, Sorsogon --
are currently busy doing preparations for the Pista sa
Maynila 2003 which is slated on the 13th of July at the
Knights of Columbus Club House in Intramuros, Manila.
This
is a grand celebration of a fiesta "away from home"
for Buluseños based in the metropolis and neighboring areas.
It would be noted that the town actually celebrates its fiesta
every 25th of July in honor of St. James the Greater.
Since its foundation in 1982, DBI had always been consistent in
its stand on the spiritual part that continuously strengthens
the group. Its 2nd Sunday masses, Pista sa Maynila,
and Christmas celebrations are but a few testimonies to this
value.
The
group expects a big turn-out this year as various activities are
well under way and certain personalities are expected to grace
the occasion. A program will immediately follow the Holy
Mass. Refreshments will be provided for everyone -- time
to sample those suman and ibos once again!

If
asked about Sorsogon’s tourism destinations then my
response would be Donsol and Bulusan....The town of
Bulusan, on the other hand, offers year-round

Irosin was busier now, but the houses are still there. Bulusan is still verdant and restful, especially during the late afternoons. Palugtok Falls remains unchanged; it’s as tranquil as ever. Ditto with Bulusan Lake, which is now well maintained and safe.

A short distance away is Bulusan Lake. It is surrounded by lush vegetation with twin peaks lording in the background. We had the entire lake all to ourselves, save for a handful of men trying their luck - apparently with success - at fishing for tilapia.
