Chapter 7: Answers

The next morning Emma walked into Mercy Hospital and almost ran to her doctor's office.  Maria had been able to snag her an appointment for eight o'clock, so the waiting room was blissfully deserted.  She gave Dr. Nordstrom's nurse her information and sat down.  She did not need this.  Johnny did not need this.  He was just starting his life over.  He'd called last night and they'd made plans to meet at her place for dinner at around 7 p.m.  How would he react if she really were pregnant? He isn't going to react because I'm not going to tell him about the baby.  After a couple more minutes of waiting she was called in.  Blood tests had been done earlier on and it looked as if the doctor was looking them over.

"Hello, Emma.  How are you?" Dr. Nordstrom had to be the nicest female physician in history and the most honest.

"I'm alright, I guess."  Emma said sitting down across from the other woman.

"Well I've been looking over your blood results and I have wonderful news.  Emma you are going to have a baby.  You're pregnant!"  Shock overtook her whole being and Emma felt like she'd lost complete bodily function.  This could not be happening.....

"Emma are you alright?" The doctor sounded concerned when Emma's stare became blank.  She had good reason, Emma felt like she would keel over any minute.

"Ah, yes I'm fine doctor.  I'm just a little shocked is all." Emma said brushing her unruly hair away from her face once she'd snapped out of it.  It was suddenly hotter in the room....yeah, that's why she was sweating.

"Well, I thought that we could start you on prenatal vitamins since you are already a couple of weeks along in your pregnancy.  Here's a chart with foods you should try to eat at least once a day."  Emma took the paper the doctor offered and rubbed at her temples.  Her head felt like it was going to explode.

"And I was wondering if we could talk about the father of the child, preferably why he isn't here with you." Dr. Nordstrom looked Emma straight in the eyes causing her to gulp.

"The ah, father is not in the picture.  I'll having this baby by myself."

"Are you sure that would be best? There are health reasons why the father should be involved.  What if the baby should need blood? Or-"

"Dr. Nordstrom, the father is involved with someone else.  He just got back on his feet and I don't think he'd appreciate this news right now.  He already has a daughter and a woman he loves.  I think it's best for the baby and myself if I just go about this alone."

"Ok, it seems that you have thought this out so I won't push.  Here's a prescription for the vitamins we talked about and another one for the morning sickness.  You should try to cut down on your exercise regimen, drink lots of water, and stay off your feet as much as possible.  I think that's it for now but if anything comes up you can set up an appointment or call me. I'll see you in two weeks ok?"

"Yes, thank you doctor."  Emma said, getting up and walking out.  How the hell was she going to face him tonight?

Six O'clock came way too quickly for Emma who was busy getting dinner ready, trying to get dressed, clean up, and do her hair all at the same time.  Maybe she should have thought about the mess she'd left this morning before setting up dinner with Johnny.  Finally at six thirty dinner was all set and the house was virtually spotless.  All that was left was getting her hair to do something and finding something appropriate to wear.  She settled for a black strapy slip on dress that came to her calves and silver slip on sandals.  Her hair was up in a silver clip with curly tendrils coming down in the back.  A tiny bit of makeup finished the look.  Emma looked at the clock and smiled satisfied.  6:53 p.m.  Not bad at all.

The doorbell rang around 7:15 p.m.  Emma opened the door and plastered a smile that she really didn’t feel on her face; her stomach was still a feeling little weird.  Johnny looked, well, like he’d always looked.  Finger-licking good.  He wore a navy blue dress shirt and black dress pants, his hair slicked back neatly.  Lilly-Rose wiggled in his embrace looking pretty sharp herself in a white and red flower dress, her hair was in two tiny little pigtails on either side of her head.  Finally Emma decided to acknowledge the woman with a firm grip on Johnny's right hand.

'She is beautiful' Emma thought wryly.  She had long brown hair that stopped right above her bum and her eyes were a stunning mix of green and hazel blue.   After inviting them in, (which seemed to be the hardest part for Emma) they began the torture of small talk while the baby played with the hem of her dress.  Dinner was slightly uncomfortable for Elyse; it seemed she didn't like jokes where only Johnny and Emma knew what was funny.  Oh well.  Emma had felt queasy and maybe somewhat dizzy so she quit eating and sipped water for the rest of the night.  Johnny must have noticed because he kept asking if she was ok.  Emma told him that she was fine and would change the subject. Around 11:15 p.m. everyone decided to call it a night and so with a somewhat heavy heart Emma watched the makeshift family get into the BMW 2001 series and drive off.

*****************

Johnny drove his BMW quickly down the street.  He wore a baggy pair of jeans and t-shirt, black shades and a Yankees baseball cap.  He couldn't help replaying his earlier fight with Elyse in his mind.  It'd put a lot of things in perspective.

"Damn it Elyse why do you always do this? I don't want to have this fight again!" Johnny was pissed off.  Why couldn't she trust him? Why did she always have to assume the worst?  He'd already explained his friendship with Emma.

"You should have seen yourself, Johnny.  It was classic.  Like a hormonal teenager with a crush on his teacher.  I wanted to puke."  Elyse said walking up to him.  His back was still turned to her but she knew he was listening.  He turned on her suddenly and pointed a finger in her face.

"You don't have a say in what I do around my friends.  And as long as we're together you have to try and respect them.  Just like I manage to tolerate your obnoxious ones.  Emma is like family."  Elyse snorted through her nose.

"Don't give me that 'She's like family' shit.  I've already had that said to me dozens of times.  Guess what? It doesn't work." She said crossing her arms over her chest.

"Listen, if you don't trust me, than maybe we shouldn’t be together anymore." Johnny said with a calm he didn't really feel.

"Fine.  I'll be leaving tonight." Elyse said, walking away in a huff.

That's when Johnny left Lilly-Rose in the care of Giselle and walked out of the house.  He felt suffocated, the need to get away for a while.  It was only 5 minutes into his walk when he decided to go get some answers and he knew exactly whom to ask.

"Johnny! Hi! Wait a minute, what are you doing here? I thought you were filming a movie." Maria said coming around her desk to greet him.

"Hey Maria.  It's great to see you. "  Johnny said sitting down across from Maria.  "Yeah, I'm filming a movie called "Red" down by the East end.  But that's not actually what I came here to talk to you about."

"Ok, what can I help you with then?" Johnny ran a nervous hand through his hair.  He wished he had a cigarette or something to take the edge off; he wasn't exactly sure how to start this.  So he just blurted out:
"I wanna know what's going on with Emma.  She hasn't been herself lately and I know you two are close, so I was wondering....if maybe, you could tell me what's up."

"Johnny you know Emma.  She's a workaholic, she doesn't know when to stop--"

"Yeah I do know her.  That's why I know something's wrong.  She looks tired and she hardly eats and she's pale.  I know you know what's wrong, so tell me already."  Johnny said bracing his arms on her desk.  Maria shook her head in refusion.

"I can't.  I promised." Maria said.  She knew she was a horrible liar and she was running out of excuses.

"Tell me now.  I have a right to know, she's my best--"

"She's pregnant."  Johnny stopped his tantrum in mid sentence.  He'd heard wrong.  There's no way Emma was pregnant.

"What?" The question was barely audible in the suddenly tension filled room.

"Emma is about 5 weeks pregnant, but she won’t tell me who the father is.  Besides from her doctor, I'm the only other person than knows and she made me swear not to tell anyone, especially you.  Now she'll probably kill me." Johnny got up from his chair and made a move for the door.

“Where are you going?” Maria asked, getting up from her desk.

“To find Emma.  I need to talk to her.” Jogging up to him, Maria grabbed his arm to make him face her.

“She’s not here.  In the U.S., I mean.  She left for St. Croix early this morning.” Johnny ran a hand through his hair and nodded his head.

“Thanks Maria.” He said, giving her a quick kiss on the cheek and almost running out of the office.  Once in his car, Johnny called his pilot and asked him to be ready to leave by 2 p.m. that afternoon.  Then he called Giselle and explained that he was leaving Lilly-Rose with her for maybe a couple of days, giving her the address of Emma’s house in St. Croix and telephone number where he could be reached.  Hanging up, Johnny turned left on 144th street in Manhattan; there was a tiny little jewelry store in China Town.  There was something very important he needed to buy.

Chapter 8: Faith

The days passed quickly for Emma, once again immersing herself in work seemed like a good idea considering that in some months she wouldn't be able to come into the office anymore.  So far only Maria and Dr. Nordstrom knew about the baby. "But that'll change soon," She said to herself, rubbing absently at swell in her abdomen.   Maybe she should stay in St. Croix and have the baby here.  No one would be the wiser; they would think she was taking another vacation. There was a knock at her front door and Emma walked down the hall to open it.  It was kind of late and she wasn't expecting anyone.  Her breath caught in her throat when she opened the door and saw Johnny on the other side.  Well, the shit has really hit the fan now. Emma thought.  There's no way she could hide her current state in the sort of clingy dress she was wearing.

Johnny looked at her for what seemed an eternity, asking a million questions with his eyes and then brought his eyes down to the swell at her abdomen.  That was his baby, his child inside of her, growing, living.  Emma sighed.  She didn't want him to find out this way; hell she hadn't wanted him to find out at all.

"Can I come in?" He asked softly, glancing back up to her face.  Emma shook her head and stepped aside so he could pass.  It was kind of poetic; Emma thought wryly, this is where the baby was conceived in the first place.   They sat down in the small living room, facing each other.

“We’re you going to tell me?” Johnny asked, voicing only one of his many questions.  Emma looked at the floor, anywhere but his face.

“Yes, just not right now.” She said and instantly wanted to slap herself for such a ridiculous sounding answer.  She did not work well under pressure.

“God Emma, did you ever think about how I would feel? Did it ever cross your mind what I would want?” He was pacing now; needed to move or do something.

“I thought I was doing the right thing.  I mean you have your career and a new girlfriend and I thought-”

“You thought wrong.  I’ve never run away from my responsibilities, no matter how bad things got.  This baby wasn’t a mistake.”

“I didn’t say it was, but what we had was a one night stand.  I didn’t want to burden you.” Silent tears ran down her face as she let her feelings be known.  Johnny knelt down in front of her and brushed them away with his thumb.

“Do you know how much I love you? How much I love this baby and it isn’t even here yet?” Emma shook her head absently.

“Johnny you don’t have-”

“Shh, let me finish.  Losing Vanessa hurt like nothing I’ve ever felt.  But you, you helped me through that.  You gave me the strength to be able to get on with my life and take care of Lilly-Rose.  Now you’re going to give me a child, that’s a feeling I can’t describe with words.”  Fresh tears sprung to Emma’s eyes as she wrapped her arms around him, thanking God for making him the beautiful man he was.

ONE YEAR LATER......

Life could simply not have been any better for Johnny Depp and Emma Wallace.  On September 27th Emma gave birth to a beautiful 7½ pound baby girl.  He couldn’t have happier.  Emma didn’t know a man in the world who enjoyed a house full of girls more than he did.  Now as Johnny pledged to spend the rest of his life making the mother of his child happy, he couldn’t help think how lucky he was.

“You may now kiss the bride.” Johnny bent down slightly and smiled at his now wife, before enveloping her lips in a kiss full of love, admiration and tenderness.  A kiss only described as timeless.....
