| I got flowers today It wasn't my birthday or any other special day. We had our first argument last night, And he said a lot of cruel things that really hurt me. I know he is sorry and didn't mean the things he said. Because he sent me flowers today. I got flowers today. It wasn't our anniversary or any other special day. Last night, he threw me into a wall and started to choke me. It seemed like a nightmare. I couldn't believe it was real. I woke up this morning sore and bruised all over. I know he must be sorry. Because he sent me flowers today. I got flowers today. And it wasn't Mother's Day or any other special day. Last night, he beat me up again. And it was much worse than all the other times. If I leave him, what will I do? How will I take care of my kids? What about money? I am afraid of him and scared to leave. But I know he must be sorry. Because he sent me flowers today. I got flowers today. Today was a very special day. It was the day of my funeral. Last night, he finally killed me. He beat me to death. If only I had gathered enough courage and strength to leave him, I would not have gotten flowers...today. -Paulette Kelly |

| I know firsthand what it is like to be deathly afraid of the person that you love. I have gone through it twice, never thinking for a minute that either one of them would ever do that to me. They would never hurt me. They would never strike a woman, would never thinking of choking her, or throwing her down a flight of stairs, or putting her head through a window. It was unthinkable that one of them might commit spousal rape, or would swing an aluminum baseball bat at the head of the woman that he "loved." But all of those things happened. And I had to choose between dying and leaving my children, or finally mustering my courage, and the strength within me, and getting out. I was lucky. I got out in time. I have heard it all. From , "oh, honey, I am SO sorry, I am just SO frustrated from work..." to "well, if you hadn't done ..." or "if you HAD done..." or "you know I was just playing, I didn't mean to get rough". I got flowers, I got presents. The size of the diamond in my ring went from 1/4 Carat to a two and a half Carat in about seven months. I was told that it was my fault, if I was a better wife...I was the best wife I could be. But it is impossible to follow the rules, and do what we are told, when we are so afraid that we are going to get hit for a little mistake. If any of this sounds familiar, even if it is just constantly being screamed at and degraded, because that is also abuse, please GET HELP. Tell someone you can trust what is going on in your life. Find and call a local women's shelter, or an abuse hotline. Just please, please, do SOMETHING to save yourself, and if you have them , your kids. |
