| I was talking to a dear friend of mine last night on the phone while I was working on this page, and she was telling me about the harassment she has been receiving since people have discovered that she is a lesbian. She attends a business school, and was being harassed by her classmates(who are in their 30's and 40's, and should know better) and she was told repeatedly she is going to hell for being what she is. There was also an incident where a girl she knew in school who was working in a convenience store refused to sell her cigarettes, because of what my friend "had become". Now I know I am not the only one who is sickened by this, and I know I am not the only one who teaches my children to accept people for who they are, that diversity is a good thing. But it is starting to occur to me that maybe it is the ADULTS around us that need to learn those lessons, before they can honestly teach them to children. I am a Bisexual; I am not afraid to admit that, and I am honest about it. My two older children(14 and 10) know and understand what that word means. It doesn't bother them in the slightest. They know numerous friends of mine who are gay, lesbian, bi, and straight, but that is not how they tell the difference between them; they know each person for their skills, their interests, the things that make them unique. They also know the meaning of the word DISCRIMINATION, and they know that it is wrong. But they have seen it. I am Pagan on top of everything else that I am, and they have seen me be discriminated against for that reason. One of my exhusbands even wanted to try to use that in our divorce against me in the custody fight for my five year old. It is a sad case when in America in the year 2003, when the country is so wiling to open it's doors to those people from other countries who have a desire for freedom, and yet Americans are still being discriminated against for sexual preference and religion. |
