Paradise in Disguise
During the almost 8 years we lived on Huff Road (near Delhi, NY), we took many walks up on the paths that we had made in the woods.
The dog’s favorite path was “Brookside Overlook”, which meandered through the woods & beside a brook. If you looked down to your right and past a stonewall, there was a bubbling brook that made a beautiful song. In those woods, we often spooked ruffed grouse and saw the trails of deer & other wildlife. Another favorite path was one that we could see for a long way off & was a great overview of our neighborhood.
After several years, we were once again on our way up Balsam Mountain. As we were hiking up the twisted upward curves, jagged rocks jabbed at our feet. Other times, loose stones skittered past our feet, rolling down the mountain. Big, thick railroad ties diverted the run-off of melting snow and heavy rains, creating several green, slimy, mirky mud puddles. Along the treacherous path, we picked big, juicy grape-sized blackberries. All the way up the rugged mountain, the cooling, autumn wind walked with us. The leaves blanketed the ground like a patchwork quilt on a bed. As we approached the frangrance of the Balsams, we heard the distict song of the changing seasons whistling among the refreshing deep green conifers. As we proceeded farther up the mountain, gusts of frigid, arctic air rushed by us. We had reached our goal, and our reward was the spectacular, breathtaking view of lakes nestled among the trees and other Catskill Mountain peaks.

The disguise part was our green and white trailer... nothing to brag about.
