ROMEO + JULIET

Romeo + Juliet. Baz Luhrmann's (Pricilla Queen of the Desert, Moulin Rouge, Strictly Ballroom) adaptation of the original Shakespeare play delivers a hypnotic and seductive update on the 1961 version "West Side Story". Set in post modern Verona Beach (Mexico City) the film depicts a violent, surreal, florescent and gritty neon world where love knows no bounds. Rival gangs, violence, drugs and teenage sex just goes to show you that even after 400 years, some things never change.

---

I bought Romeo + Juliet because it IS my official "favorite movie" which doesn't mean I think it's the best movie ever made, but for myself, for personal reasons, some of which I can't even quite explain, it's the one I settled on in the end, if anyone can be expected to do so.

When I saw the movie for the first time, it made me feel old.

It made me realize that I was no longer a young, hotheaded hip kid anymore. My generation had come and gone, and while I was still relatively young, it was obvious that the torch had been passed.

When Benvolio says, "These hot days is the mad blood stirred", I knew exactly what he meant but it no longer applied to me. Now I could only watch and remember what it had been like.

There is one scene in the movie late in the summer and the Montagues have already had their fill of wine, women and song, yet are so bored they find themselves at the beach using their pistols to shoot at fish. The Capulets are seen approaching in the distance, signaling the inevitable, that there is nothing left to do but quarrel and incur damage.

There comes a time in every young man's life, when he is endowed with all the gifts life has to offer yet is still not satisfied. Bored, hot and irritable, this is usually when he accrues his most treasured aspirations and memorable regrets.
