Carnival
James is dead so Nick gets a hug. Suzanne Pell is the new social worker - she's pretty and gritty and wears cheap clothes in a cool way, not that Nick notices (yet) as they help a carnival boy whose mother won't protect him from the abusive owner. Burton invites the man he and Nick beat up to F&F for petit-fours, and makes him sign away all their troubles. Lulu wants to have her Chinese food and eat it too. She "more than cares" about Nick. He throws her out for being incomprehensible. Burton takes Shannon back, but first he asks Nick what he thinks of him as a father. The perfect moment to cut to a word from our sponsors, don't you think? I mean, who really wants to know Nick's answer to such a silly irrelevant question anyway? No one, that's who. Big Coal
Nick has a new colleague, spunky Sadie. His new client, a coal company, has a burning mine that's making people sick, including Petra who lives a miserable existence in a dead town with only Judge Judy and Jehovah's Witnesses for company. Nick gets a conscience about it. He'd make a great JW: he's got the suit, he's got the nice haircut, he remains unmoved by silly jokes, and he's got about as much joy in him as someone who believes the end of the world is nigh. Lulu wants to talk about things (well, mostly she wants to talk about sex). She wants closure and says sorry with a smirk. She's wearing a curtain and Nick wishes she wasn't, so he asks her back to his place so he can relieve her of it. This episode has the highest Nick Fix of all time! Everyone signs a lot of forms.

The Line
Alvin is feeling left out as the only man on the show who hasn't beaten someone to a pulp yet, so he takes some happy snaps of an LSP board member (without asking first!) and punches the guy when he objects. He gets fired. Lulu takes Alvin's job, gives Alvin a new job as a lowly lawyer, and tells Nick she's his boss now... which is strange because that's what she said two years ago, too. Nick's LSP client is a young prostitute with a hopeless future (like every LSP client). Nick's F&F client is about to take over dad's firm until someone plays the race card to generate a class action. Burton wants Nick to pick up his childhood stuff to make room for all the stuff he's buying Shannon. Nick doesn't want the stuff, but eventually agrees to collect it, as it might come in handy for future plot devices.

The Father-Daughter Dance
It's the end of an era as Nick says bye-bye to the broom closet. Lulu sends him to talk to a terminally ill mother in a hospice. Later she says sorry like she's apologising for taking his parking space. She won't give Alvin any work (payback time!) so he goes to the track and wins a lot of money. She consults with the community service guy about this personnel problem. A couple wants to sue a fertility clinic when their baby is born half-black. Nick uncovers the truth and it all ends in murder, jail, and foster care. Nick meets blind Samantha, who will go to a psych ward unless someone takes her in. Her druggie father tries hard and shares a secret handshake with Nick, but succumbs to the temptations of the Big City. Shannon is a dancing peanut.

The bank wants money from Burton. Burton wants money from Alex1. Gus2 wants money from Lulu. Lucas3 wants money from Jake. Gus thinks Lulu is a whore. Jed4 thinks the women in his club are insane. Lucas thinks Nick is not a real lawyer. Nick thinks Jake is gay. Jake thinks Alvin's slice will embarrass him. Nick interrupts Judge Damsen! Twice! In a pivotal scene, Lulu removes a carwash flyer from her windscreen. Lulu makes sure Nick knows that she was a 14-year-old cheerleader with a cute football boyfriend. Whoopee-do. Her dad did some non-descript all-purpose terrible things and that, like, explains everything. Bye-bye Sadie. You're too smart, too professional, and too tall.
