"1998 and all that"

Many of you know, but some do not, know of the events of 26th November 1998. As I am writing this, it is exactly 4 years since "the raid".

On the morning of that day, 100 police and Social Workers entered our home. First they arrested Jeanette, Joyce, Sheila and Karen and took them away to the Police station for questioning. Then they removed 12 children and young people under the age of 18 and 14  vulnerable adults.

As explained on another page of this site, of the 26 removed, 18 returned home. Some have since moved on, and Rachel sadly died in 2000.

In the year 2000 a High Court judge, having heard the evidence of hundreds of witnesses, made a judgment on the numerous allegations made which had resulted in the raid. His judgment has been published. Among his findings were that the Old Convent was not a violent home. He returned 3 children to that home. A few days after they returned home (in July 2000) the Police dropped all the charges against Jeanette and Karen. (Charges against Joyce and Sheila had been dropped in March 1999.)

The events of 26th November 1998 were very traumatic and everyone has their own memories. Events which followed it were just as distressing.  Anyone who wants to know more now can find out by emailing us at the address on the Contact Details page.
