Battery Draw Test on a CJ7
To my mind, troubleshooting and repairing a draw on a battery comes down to a divide and conquer methodology. The process of elimination is the single best way to reduce the number of wires and circuits to tinker with. IMHO, the best order of steps to approach a draw is as such:

  • First thing to do is to determine whether or not there is in fact a draw on your battery.
  • Pull the fuses to see if the problem circuit can be identified by isolating the ground from the battery. Not only will this tell you which circuit is causing the draw, but it will also tell you that the draw is downstream of the fuse holder in the panel.
  • Disconnect the bulkhead firewall harness connector to isolate the wiring in the engine compartment. This should be after the fuse test to better ensure the ground is not downstream of the fuse panel and probably exists inside the engine compartment.
  • Isolate the battery and start from the beginning. This is usually where you find problems with the Starter Solenoid, Alternator, or other engine comparment wiring ailments.
