Katie,
Fat Katie as she was known round these parts….
Was
the love of our lives, grandma
in one way or another to almost all our dogs.
She was our very first Cactusmoon
Lab. We named her after
one of our very favorite John
Wayne movies.
I remember before she
was even born, in the
womb, I would call the breeder up and ask how’s the mom???
Has she had the pups…by the time
Katie
was born I know that lady wanted to shoot me!!! I was soooo excited.
It was NO different than adopting a child.
Finally, what seemed like an eternity Katie came to our
house…..from day one she knew her shit did not stink….hhahahah
she was beautiful, intelligent, funny,
very independent. Dave
taught her all the hand signals, whistle commands,
she was his constant companion.
When we moved from Mina
to Fallon
Katie was in seventh heaven…30 acres to roam ON….
Unfortunately one day
she and Bunny
Foo
Foo
roamed a little to much, Bunny
came back but Kate did not. We
were devastated….where could she be???
We looked high and low,
No
Katie….the next night our neighbor called us and said she could
hear this very faint bark out in back of her house….so Dave,
Ron
and Kathy climbed on the tractor and headed out in that
direction…..it was very dark and some distance, but the flashlight
reflected a set of eyes in the bushes….there was Kate,
she was in a coyote trap…..very cold, hungry, tired and
soooooooo happy to see friendly faces.
They removed her paw, scooped her up and
Brought
her home. She had
a cut across her paw….so for months we’d say,
Katie…
Show
us your owieee…. she’d hold up her paw,
after awhile she would forget which paw it was.
We were so grateful that she didn’t die a horrible death,
Katie lived for Another 5 years,
as a couch potato and queen.
Last winter a bale of
hay fell off the stack of hay and broke her hip.
The Dr said it could
Not
be fixed as her bones were just to old,
the tough ole gal started using her hip as
If
nothing happened. (at
that time it was difficult deciding if we should put her down)
Then a few weeks ago she
took a turn for the worse, had
a hard time getting up and down,
finally she just went down and couldn’t get up.
All of you who have ever loved a dog (who was your child) and
knew that you had to make the decision to put them down, knows what
we went through. After
many tears, guilt, sleepless nights it all boiled down to one
thing….Fat Katie must not suffer any more.
Even though her appetite was still good (she, Snort
and I always feed a fever and feed a cold),
she was suffering. We
made
The
decision to take her in today.
She had a steak for dinner….and we bought her an awesome
bone. (which she gnawed
on all night long)
When we told her she was
going to Rainbow
Bridge to be with
Dakota, Stormy, Yeller, Lady Bugs, and the butthead Cowboy her eyes
were bright and her tail wagged.
The ride to the Vets
was almost unbearable; Snorkies
came along to be of support.
Dave had dug a grave on
“look out hill” earlier; we
wrapped Fat Katie in our favorite
Horse
blanket, and with her
daughter Cat, her grandkids and various other dogs we buried her
next to Dakota.
Now she’s happy,
young, healthy and chasing those birds with her buddies
in
RAINBOW
BRIDGE
.
HAVE
FUN, FAT KATE, WE LOVE
AND MISS YOU TERRIBLY
