The Team

The St. John's Maple Leafs were the American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs for a total of 14 seasons. Many good players went through this farm team system during their stay in St. John's including but not limited too names like, Damian Rhodes, Felix Potvin, Yannic Perrault, Nathen Dempsey, Danny Markov, Matt Stajan, Kyle Wellwood and many more. The 2004-2005 season marked the 14th and FINAL season that the Leafs called St. John's, Newfoundland home. They came to St. John's in the 1991-1992 season, and on January 6th/04 the leafs played their 1000 AHL hockey game. Unfortunalty work on a new contract to extend the agreement with St. John's and Toronto fell through during negotiations mainly becasue the Big Leafs preffered having the farm close to home and the recently departed toronto Road Runners from Ricoh Colleseum made it too tempting to pass up. The Baby LEafs however were a model AHL franchinse in St. John's and the people did not deserve to lose the team they loyally followed and made a success for 14 years. The farm Team will now operate out of Toronto as the Toronto Marlies. I wish all the players good luck in their careers they will be missed in St. Johns! The Last season turned out to be the best regular season since the Leafs inagural season in 1991. They finished in 2nd in their division nailing down 98 points. They unfortunatly were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs 4-1 by the manitoba moose. The season was not a total loss due to some memorable highlights such as Kyle Wellwoods franchise record 5 goals in a game, and the Leafs franchise record wins in a season and wins at home (46 & 26)! The Leafs Will Be Missed. The QMJHL has since moved into Mile One Stadium. The St. John's FOG DEVILS will start a new era in the Capital City.

MILE ONE STADIUM
The Memorial Stadium Stood as a shrine for more than 50 years in St. John's, Newfoundland and has seen many hockey games, public skates, roller-skating and concerts. You name it the stadium has held it. That includes the AHL's St. John's Maple Leafs Hockey Organization. Ten Years the Leafs spent playing in this facility. But the time came in April 2001 to end the long held tradition at the Memorial Stadium and it closed it's doors for good at the end of the 2000-2001 hockey season. Since its opening, Mile One Stadium has hosted many premier events such as the 2002 Juno awards, held there in April 2002, the 2002 ASSANTE/BAKER HUGUES AHL Allstar Classic in February and the Scott Tournament of Hearts in 2005. The arena has also hosted many concerts such as The Barenaked Ladies, The Tragically Hip, Jann Arden, Snoop Dogg, The Game and Pearl Jam just to name a few. The arena also had an important and abrupt introduction to the public during the 9/11 tragedy in the USA. It became a makeshift shelter for thousands of stranded Air passengers from all over the world. The Stadium is now the new Home of the QMJHL'S St. John's FOG DEVILS.
