Yin and Yang are the two most fundamental opposing
principle in the functioning of Natural Law (Tao). The definition
is: "Yang is the principle of dynamism, Yin is the principle of hiding"
. Or basically, Yang is dynamism and
Yin is silence.
In the I-Ching, it was said: "One stroke of Yin and
one stroke of Yang is called Tao"
. In
other words, Natural law functions through cycles of silence and dynamism - Just
as it is said in the "Tao Teh Ching" verse 40.1:
"Reversing is the way of movement of Tao".
In the beginning, there is only pure silence. From
this, infinite dynamism is generated, and creation begins. But pure dynamism
will not lead to any stable structure, which can only be maintained by a
combination of silence and dynamism. That is why there is an
ancient saying: "Yin alone will not grow, Yang alone will not
last."

Accordingly, everything can be attributed to either Yin or Yang. Some of the most common opposites are listed below:
