Christmas 1995
When I was in high school, I was asked to keep a journal for english class. We were expected to enter our thoughts for each day.

“November 3, 1982: I’ve never felt completely attached to my body. Looking out through my eyes I can see the bridge of my nose, the top of my cheeks, and usually my hair. It’s like God gave us each a tour bus while we’re down here on our earth trip. When the tour is over, we step down out of the bus and go home.”

I still feel that way today. I didn’t choose the make or the model, but I’ll make the best of what I was given. We all have different maintenance schedules, some vehicles are more complete than others, some require outside assistance... and because we weren’t given the opportunity to choose our little tour busses, the size, shape and color really are no reflection of the driver.

This past year I was given the opportunity to take a Metro bus to school every day. This particular bus route stops at a variety of socio-economical communities ranging from Badger Road to Arbor Hills. So many types of people - all sharing the same experience. This was a life lesson for me. Each of us had varying abilities and disabilities, struggles and revelations, moments of kindness and moments of self-centeredness. Some of us had a lot on our minds, while others drifted away. There were renters and owners and the homeless... and some people who weren’t very aware of the world around them. But for that one brief trip, trying to get from point A to point B, we were all in the same place at the same time and we were all equal.

I wonder if the government would be run any differently if our representatives and senators were required to take the bus to work every day?

Don and I are excited about the upcoming year and the birth of our baby in April. This holiday season already feels special to us... we hope that yours is equally as wonderful. Happy Holidays!
