The Leach Family
of
Campbell and Claiborne Counties, Tennessee

The Leaches of Campbell County are my dad's family. Family stories say that they came to Tennessee from northern Virginia, by way of the Shenendoah Valley and Cumberland Gap. Other family stories say that the Leaches were "Black Dutch." Some family members say that the Leaches were Germans who first settled in Pennsylvania; others say the Leaches were from Scotland who intermarried with Cherokees. Another cousin says we're Irish. All I know for sure is, there are a powerful lot of them in Campbell County, Tennessee, and most of us are related somehow.

William and Margaret Leach of Campbell County

1. William Leach was born circa 1806. He married Margaret, surname presently unknown. He appeared on the census of Jun 10, 1860 at Fincastle, Campbell County, Tennessee, USA.

Children of William Leach and Margaret ??? were as follows:

Generation Two

2. Thomas Franklin Leach (William1) was born circa 1833. His wife's name is presently unknown. Thomas is listed in William and Margaret's household on the 1860 census, as Franklin Leach, age 23.

Correction!

Children of Frank Leach, widower, according to the 1880 census, were as follows:

I had always assumed, because of the ages, that the Frank who in 1880 is the father of Speed had to be the Thomas Franklin who was the son of William and Margaret. However, it looks like that isn't so! In the 1860 census, 2 new Leach families appear in Campbell County: Josiah Leach and D.F. Leach. Both of these men had previously appeared on the Claiborne County census. In the 1870 census, William and Margaret no longer appear; however, there is a Thomas Leach married to Testy or Tessy. Josiah and Doctor F. Leach (farmers) appear in another subdivision of Campbell County, and Doctor F. has sons Robert and Sneed and daughter Lucy. Then in 1880, Frank Leach has sons Robert and Speed and daughters Lucy and Malinda.

So now I'm looking into the Leaches of Claiborne County as well as Campbell County. I'd still like to know more about William and Margaret, their sons, and especially William's ancestors and siblings. And I'd love to hear from anyone who has run into Josiah Leach or Doctor Franklin Leach in either Campbell or Claiborne Counties.
