Music: "What's New Pussycat" by Tom Jones
to my Paulie Page.
Believe me, you're not experiencing deja vu, Paulie opened in theaters on April 17, 1998 and was soon after released to video. The DreamWorks' film "Paulie," is the story of a blue crowned conure who flaps through many adventures trying to reunite with his first love, Marie, the little girl who was torn away from him early in his life. Throughout his journeys he plays many roles and learns many things, even going so far as becoming a jewel thief. But ultimately, he teaches every life he touches about love, fun, and the importance of speaking candidly and from the heart.
||Jay Mohr- Paulie's voice and Vinny the con man.|
|Hallie Kate Eisenberg- Marie, Paulie's first love. Paulie learns how to talk while assisting Marie with her stuttering problem. Paulie is sadly taken away from her when her father believes that she is growing too attached to him.||
||Gena Rowlands- Ivy, The kind woman. Ivy is a woman who needs Paulie as much as he needs her. She helps him begin his search for Marie, and in return, Paulie becomes her seeing eye bird as she goes blind in the last months of her life.|
|Tony Shalhoub- Misha, the lonely immigrant. Misha, originally from Russia, is the Janitor at the research facility where Paulie remains a prisoner. He only speaks broken English yet is truly a man of brilliance. In Russia he was a teacher of Russian Literature, while in America he is reduced to being a janitor. He sacrifices his janitorial job to free Paulie from his prison in the "Dungeon." Only with Misha's help, does Paulie return to Marie.||
||Trini Alvarado- Adult Marie. By the time Paulie finds his Marie, twenty years have passed and she is a beautiful young woman with flowers in her hair. When you see the film you will understand.|
|Cheech Marin- The unforgettable Ignacio. Ignacio is one of Paulie's many friends who teach him about having fun on his journey.||
Artie the pawn shop vendor. He sells Paulie to Ivy, and teaches him the
value of a diamond.
Tia Texada- Ruby, Vinny's love interest and the (voice of) Lupe, Paulie's love interest.
Matt Craven- Warren Alweather. Marie's father... need I say more.
Bruce Davidson- Dr. Reingold. Another meanie. He trapped Paulie in a basement cage for years at his research facility.
Bill Cobbs (Virgil) and Laura Harrington (Lila) portray employees at the research institute.
I hope that I have been able to provide you with a little insight into this fabulous film. If you have not seen Paulie yet, please rent it. It is an amazing and highly entertaining film. It teaches us about warmth and caring and certainly shows its audience that when you are brave enough to speak from your heart you can never go wrong. Also, take the opportunity to discuss the film with your children. Birds are fabulous creatures sometimes misunderstood because often they must be handled with care. Please encourage everyone to treat birds with the respect that they deserve. You'll never know which one could be the next Paulie.
