To gild
refined gold, to paint the lily,
To
throw a perfume on the violet,
To smooth the ice, or add another
hue
Unto the rainbow, or with taper
light
To seek the beauteous eye of heaven to
garnish,
Is wasteful and ridiculous
excess.
~ William Shakespeare, King John ~

I cherish rainbows
within my heart,
where dreams and hopes reside--
rainbows as colorful and as blithe
as those that light up the skies.
When dark clouds cluster,
or dire storms shroud the sun,
I keep my inward rainbows agleam
and persist--
till the heavens unveil
anew.
Then dewdrops dance to
sunbeams,
and mists beguile the golden rays.
Afresh may I find the celestial arcs
that would illuminate my days.
