The Princess Bride Special Edition DVD is a must in any home!  The movie was originally released in the 1980's, and has only grown in popularity over the years.  It is a classic of our time.  The movie is PG, and a very fun family film!  The DVD special edition has many extra's including current interviews with most of the cast, and documentary (As You Wish), and footage not previously viewed during the filmmaking (actor Cary Elwes added footage he shot during that time), as well as many more fun features.  I want to add that the film was based from the novel, The Princess Bride, by William Goldman, who has interesting comments to add in the special features of this dvd.  The director of the film, Rob Reiner, is also extensively interviewed.  Rob Reiner has had a pulse on what the audience wants to see with romance/comedies, and other genre's.  His films are among my top choices as a viewing audience member.

The Princess Bride is a film that encompasses the classic fairytale, but with a twist of humor.  It has always been a favorite film of mine, and it was the film that introduced me to hunky actor Cary Elwes (Wesley) back in the 1980's.  The film starts out with a grandfather (wonderful actor Peter Falk) reading a fairytale to his sick grandson (a young, and adorable, Fred Savage).

The fairytale is regarding Buttercup (played by Robin Wright Penn) and Wesley, the farmboy (Cary Elwes), falling in love, alongside all of the adventure that follows in their quest to be together.  Elwes and Wright Penn are both very fun to watch with their good looks, chemistry, alongside the twists of humor and romance that follow.  The Princess Buttercup, while at a loss for her feared dead Wesley, becomes engaged to Prince Humberdinck (wonderfully portrayed by Chris Sarandon), a man she doesn't love, but needs for her survival.

Buttercup is then kidnapped by an unlikely sort of fellows:  Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin), Vizzini (Wallace Shawn), and Fezzik (Andre 'the Giant' Rene Roussimoff).  While kidnapped and on the run, the Dread Pirate Roberts (Elwes) has one of the best sword fights on screen in film history with Inigo Montoya (Patinkin).  It is truly amazing to watch these two men (the actors did their own sword play) in the sport of fencing.

The film continues onward with humor at times, and romance, set in the form of a lot of adventure.  The female audience swoons at the thought of handsome Wesley carrying Buttercup through the Fire Swamp, as well as his signature line of "As you wish."  There is a moment that Wesley doesn't seem to be alive, but then Inigo and Fezzik save him by taking him to a healer and his wife (played by Billy Crystal, and Carol Kane).  The relationship between Wesley, Inigo, and Fezzik strengthens to a great friendship.  Buttercup is set to marry Humperdinck, but Wesley is able to use his strong (and delightful) voice to ease his way out of a tough situation with Humperdinck.  The banter back and forth between Wesley and Humperdinck is priceless.  In the end, Wesley is able to conquer the cowardess Prince Humperdinck.  The ending is one of every fairy tale, and every girl's wish:  True Love avails.

This movie is definitely one for children and adults alike.  The message of good intent versus the opposite is present in this film, as well as enough romance for women, adventure for men, and children enjoying the general outline of the film.  The Princess Bride is a classic, and one for all generations to enjoy for many years to come.
