I bought myself a puppy, with nothing much in mind
Except to be a friend to me and with me all the time.
I brought her home, she settled in, things seemed to be real great.
I taught her all the household rules and "night" trained with a crate.
She was so smart and caught on quick, well I was pleased as punch
So we both joined obedience class, to follow up a hunch.
Within ten weeks she learned it all, at only five months old
I was so proud, I told my friends, "She's worth her weight in gold"
My teacher said, "Why not go on?" so we joined Open class
And with the same great love for work she caught on just as fast.
My teacher said, "She'll soon grow up, but now don't work her more
'Cause she's not really old enough and you'll only make her sore'.
I tried to heed her sound advice in case I hurt my pup
But stubborn as the Shepherd is, each obstacle she'd 'Hup' !
So on we worked thru winter's rage, soon signs of Spring we'd see
And at the first chance we had, we entered for C.D.
C.D. in hand, we went on and entered Open "A"
The first time was a wash-out 'cause it rained and rained all day
In four more trials we did it! Even more than I'd expect
My sixteen month old puppy has earned her C.D.X. !
We started out in April and here it is July
Her U.D. is the next step, so of course you'll see us try
July is gone and August too, September was less than great
And now the number o' trials we've blown add up to total EIGHT !
The weekend came, I packed the van, a three-day trial was waiting
And every day she qualified ! We got a U.D. for Thanksgiving !
I wrote this little story so all can say they've heard
That we're still breeding brains in our beloved German Shepherd. |
