Torquay D-Day slipways |
The first WW2-related site I documented in Torquay were the two concrete slipways at Torquay harbour which were constructed for the embarkation of American troops from Torbay (much the same role as the slipway at Brixham harbour). Unfortunately there has been speculation about demolishing these slipways because they are really starting to show their age and some doubt their structural integrity. Danger signs have now been placed on both slips - I personally hope they do not demolish these slipways as it will be another case of a WW2 relic being lost forever. Like the slipway at Brixham there is a plaque mounted above the slipways detailing their use for the embarkation of troops for 'Operation Overlord'.
Please examine the photographs below for more information about the D-Day slipways at Torquay Harbour.

Torquay Church memorial plaque |
There are a few churches in Torquay town, but the only one I could find with any kind of war memorial was a fairly large church near the harbour. The actual church was locked but outside I was pleased to find a stone tablet and statue of Christ on the cross serving as a memorial to the townsfolk of Torquay who died in both great wars. |

Torquay gardens memorial |
The memorial which stands in Torquay gardens is what I consider to be the grandest memorial in Torbay (in regards to its stature) and is truly a wonderful monument in both its asthetics and its dedication. This memorial is often used as a place of comemoration for veterans and only a short while ago did I see the proud spectacle of many old veterans clutching their standards in front of the memorial in memory of their fallen comrades on June 6th 1944.
The memorial was erected in memory of the fallen townsfiolk who died in the First World War but there are plaques in memory of those who died in the second.
