This pump has an interesting story attached to it. On the evening of 5 June yet another of the frequent Allied air-raids began, and a large house in La Haule park, opposite the church, caught fire. The mayor and the villagers formed a long line from the village pump, passing buckets of water from hand to hand to throw upon the flames. As they struggled to pass the buckets quickly enough, paratroopers began to fall like human confetti amongst them. It was the start of the American airborne invasion.
