This page documents the Kingswear Coastal Defence Battery located at Brownstown Point. This battery, built in 1940, provided adequate defence for the town of Dartmouth; which was the location of the Royal Naval College and also provided a base for numerous shipwrights - ideal targets for German fighter-bombers. Kingswear battery was equipped with much the same armaments and crew as Brixham. There were two main emplacements, a BOP, a maintainence hut, stores for ammunition, two searchlights and other smaller buildings that housed equipment such as the diesel generator. This battery is spread out over a wider area than Brixham battery - especially the two searchlights which are situated quite a way down from the BOP.
Thanks to the National Trust, much of the undergrowth and thicket that was swamping the site has now been cleared, opening the battery up and (almost) returning it to its original look.
Please examine the photographs I took of Brownstown Battery to learn more about this interesting southwest WW2 site of interest.
