This is the exterior of the Battery Observation Post (BOP) and was the nerve centre of the entire battery. This twin-storey building had a wide view over the bay and housed all equipment used when in action or alert. The Battery Commander - who was one out of a compliment of five - was in communication with both guns and both searchlights. These could be contacted via phone or loudspeaker. The BOP housed very accurate range finders including a large 'Barr & Stroud' range finder on the lower floor and it was from here that orders were sent out to the guns and searchlights. The reason for the fancy work at the front of the roof was to fool any enemy ship or aircraft that this building was in fact an innocent summer dwelling. |
