This is shelter was used by the Royal Artillerymen stationed at the battery as a store for small arms. Spares for all the guns and searchlights were also thought to have been stored there. It had been a shelter much like it is today before the war but was converted into a storehouse soon after. It was nicknamed 'The Altmark' - a name thought taken from a German ship that was used to hold British prisoners of war which was subject to a successful raid by HMS Cossack in a Norwegian fjord. Today it serves as a public shelter - much as it would have done before WW2.
