Explorer Post 440

Past Captain's Directory

The purpose of this small section of the post website is to give recognition to those people who have been elected by their fellow members and served as Captain of Explorer Post 440.

The reason for this recognition is that it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to take on this position and hold it for an entire year. Also, it is, sometimes, hard to take responsibility for the activities of the post, both in planning and following through with them.

For their unselfish dedication to Explorer Post 440 we do so honor the following current and past Captain's of our great post.

Captain Jonathan W. Schroeder (1994-1995)

Jon (a.k.a. O'Neil) was the first captain that Post 440 ever had. During his term in office the post got through its "childhood" year. It established itself as a post "to be reckoned with" in the terms of competitions with other posts, and overall program. Post 440 quickly became one of Samoset Council's premire posts. During his term, Jon was elected as the Explorer Presidents' Association Vice President, thus giving the post an overall say in what was going on at the council level. Truely, it was a banner beginning for a great post.

Captain Myron J. Oestreich (1995-1997)

Myron (a.k.a. Rudy) became the successor to Capt. Schroeder in 1996. Myron served two terms in office from 1996 to 1998. During his terms the Post was in its heyday. We had one officer on the council E.P.A. board, and were putting out a strong program to all of our members. At one point during Myron's term the post membership listings soared to twenty members. During 1997, Myron was elected as the Explorer Presidents' Assoc. Vice President which, along with the election of Jon to the Secretary/Treasurer position, provided Post 440 with a majority of the vote on the E.P.A. Executive Board. Basically, Post 440 was in charge of Exploring in Samoset Council. Not bad for a two year old post.

Captain Nathan Hinz (1997-1998)

Nathan (a.k.a. Big Nate) served as the successor to Capt. Oestreich in 1998. Though Capt. Hinz only served one year in office, his overall impact on the post was huge. It was during this year that Post 440 had its biggest success in its fundraising. Through the cooperation of the post and the Merrill Jaycees, the post was able to raise money by co-sponsoring youth dances at the Jaycees youth center. Though membership numbers decreased during this year, Capt. Hinz was just the right person to hold the post together through its difficulties.

Captain Michael Dunlop (1998-2001)

Mike (a.k.a. Durlap) came to post 440 during the fall of 1998 from a local B.S.A. troop. He became the successor to Capt. Hinz in December of 1998. Since his term began a few short months ago, Capt. Dunlop has worked with the older members of the post to make a serious recruitment drive for the spring of 1999. As it stands, post 440 has increased its membership by five with this drive (names will be added to the member listing soon). Also planned for Capt. Dunlop's term is training with a local Vol. Fire Dept. through our advisor (former Capt. Oestreich). It looks like this organization will be comming back around in the face of those who counted it dead a few months ago.

Captain Rebekah Schroeder (2001 - ?)

Well, like brother, like sister. Rebekah is the second Schroeder to hold the position of Captain in our post. Since Cap. R. Schroeder has just taken office a couple of weeks ago, only time will tell as to how her efforts in this office will come out. It can be guarnteed, however, that even though the post is going through some tough times right now, the determination of its membership will never let it die.

Past Presidents' Assoc. Message

Soon those who began this post will be long gone, and this list of names will be longer and longer. We can only hope that those officers who come after us will insure that this post lives up to all of the traditons begun over the past five years. We wish to them the best of luck in all Exploring endevours, and hope that they never forget why they joined Post 440. For the fun, and for the memories.

~Post 440 Past Presidents' Assoc.
